Here's something different you can do for VALENTINE'S DAY

6 February 2003

Here's something different you can do for VALENTINE'S DAY ... get married at GOLD STRIKE CASINO RESORT. The casino is running a special Valentine's weekend special and that will let you and your significant other say "I DO" in their Golden Hearts Chapel. From Feb. 13 to 16, you can book a wedding at the casino that provides the chapel and select amenities for the ceremony and reception. Gold Strike also is offering what it calls its SWEETHEART'S RENDEZVOUS that couples can enter with a great prize offered ... two nights at MANDALAY BAY in Vegas. You can find out more about it by calling (888) 24K-PLAY, ext. 1238 or go to goldstrikemississippi.com. Or check out the details in a separate story, which begins on the front page.

Also at Gold Strike, don't forget the HBO fight night and cigar smoker there on Feb. 8 and for which it has now been confirmed that former four-time world champ, VINNY "PAZ" PAZIENZA will be there in person to meet and greet. In the featured middleweight bout, SUGAR SHANE MOSELEY will square off against RAULMARQUEZ. Tickets are 10 bucks and include food and beverages. New in town from the SANDS in Atlantic City, where he was VPof Operations, is PAUL GRECO, bringing 21 years of experience to his post as director of player development at GRAND CASINO. And SUSAN OUTLAW-JACKSON joins the marketing department at GOLD STRIKE. JACK ELIA will put his long years of experience to work at SAM'S TOWN as the new director of food & beverage.

FAIRBANKS STEAKHOUSE at Hollywood Casino, seven-time winner of the prestigious DiRoNA(Distinguished Restaurants of North America) also is making its mark in the wine department with the recent induction of room manager, BILL GLASS, as a master Knight of Knights of the Vine, which is an association of individuals who share an appreciation for and an interest in the vines and wines of America. VP of Food & Beverage MARC SILVERBERG has been elevated to Master-Cellar Master, a person who has demonstrated superior wine knowledge. And, if you are going to try the legendary KOBE steak at Fairbanks, Silverberg recommends it be accompanied by a bottle of Elderton CSM, Barossa Valley, Australia 1998.

HOLLYWOOD CASINO continues to garner awards for quality recognition, the latest being the GOVERNOR'S AWARD, the highest award of the Mississippi Quality Awards program. The casino is the only organization in the state to receive this award for 2002. Earlier, last April, Hollywood was the first and only casino to be honored by the Greater Memphis Association for Quality with the PYRAMID OF EXCELLENCE AWARD. Both awards are based on the MALCOM BALDRIDGE National Quality Program's Criteria for Performance Excellence.

Here's something a little different that will be interesting to certain folks. The MEMPHIS AREA PIPE SMOKERS will hold its annual "Pipe, Cigar and Blade Show" at Hollywood Casino in the ballroom Saturday, March 29, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. More info is available at www.pipeclub.org.

BALLY'S and HARRAH'S are offering a new game, the first in the state to feature it. The table game is "2-2-1," or as I prefer to call it "Triple Hand Poker." It comes from the inventive mind of Englishman Derek Webb; he brought us the very popular Three Card Poker, and 21+3. It should be noted that while Triple Hand Poker is based on poker ranks and hand sorting, the player does not have to understand poker to play this game. You can even ask the dealer to set your hand for you. I can't explain all the details here as it gets involved, so check out the story on page 20.

This has already been featured in JACKPOT! but the item is worth repeating here. REPLAY'S SPORTS BAR in GRAND CASINO will be the site of competition for ring girls for the TYSON-ETIENNE heavyweight fight at the Pyramid on Feb. 22. In the qualifying rounds, winners receive cash but the big payoff is for the three final winners who earn a comp trip to Vegas. Now, that's worth walking around a boxing ring holding up a round-number card. You can get more info from JACKIE WARD, Grand's PR rep, at (662) 357-3089. Tryout dates still left are on Feb. 7 and 21.

Here's a heavyweight promo from PEARL RIVER RESORT'S Choctaw Band. The resort is giving away one ton of gold and silver, including a grand prize of seven 32-oz. gold bars, during its "HEAVY METAL" giveaway running though April 6. You get in by earning drawing tickets based on play and use of your River Rewards card. For more info, go to www.pearlriverresort.com.

FROM THE QUOTABLE GAMBLER ... The Lyons Press

"They would be sitting there for hours, keeping track of what number came up and marking it down. They might not make a bet in an hour. They seemed to have it timed perfectly, just when to lose. A fellow there told me they were playing a system, and they only bet at certain times. When I bet without a system, why, they look at me like I was crazy. I don't know why, because I was losing just as good as they were."

— WILL ROGERS, "A Visit to Monte Carlo" A Will Rogers Treasury (1982).
