Heard it on The River: Keno is alive and well in Tunica

28 March 2008

KENO has been an on the endangered species list for thousands of years but it is alive and well at one place…SAM'S TOWN Tunica. The Chinese came up with the lottery-like game in 2000 B.C., remember. And it is still going strong at Sam's Town, albeit a much improved version. The casino has recently installed an upgraded system and has a solid base of fans that make keeping the game around a positive thing. Pick enough spots correctly and you can even win $100,000. Check out the keno parlor on the second floor and the article in this issue on page 19.

Besides blues and gambling, Mississippi is also known around the nation as a great place for golf and that situation is about to undergo improvement. GRAND CASINO RESORT TUNICA is celebrating its 10th anniversary golf season with significant upgrades on the COTTONWOODS course that will change its look back to that of a links course as it was originally intended to be. There's a big write-up on this as well in this issue of Jackpot!

Architect STAN GENTY is working on the plan that improves course conditions and the golf experience, which is saying something because the experience was always great. When the renovations are completed this spring, some 90 percent of the original trees will be in a woodpile somewhere and 60 acres of native grasses will be added, just hope it's not crabgrass, a hardy native hereabouts. The greens will be converted in June to Champion Bermuda turfgrass to add another level of complexity. One move we all favor, at least the hackers among us, is that the 15th hole with that dang canal bisecting the fairway where your drive would normally land, will be shortened, taking the canal out of play. Hooray! For rates and packages call (877) 307-7529.

It is no secret that Tunica County has an outstanding CONVENTION & VISITORS BUREAU but if you were in the dark on Mars, that rep has been confirmed, again. The organization headed up by WEBSTER FRANKLIN, has won CVB of the Year from the state for in the $1000, 000 budget range and over. It's a repeat from last year. The success of the CVB's "Take Me Away to Tunica" campaign that ran in markets across the southeast was a key factor in the selection as was the organization's successful brand management of all the county's publicly owned tourism attractions. Old friend ANN COGGINS, sales manager, won MTA Member of the Year. My coveted ATTABOY AWARD goes this month to all the gang at the CVB, including their top notch PR PRO, CLAIRE PITTMAN.

At PEARL RIVER RESORT I played some golf recently and met some true greats. REGGIE COLLIER, the Southern Miss star, who was the first quarterback to both run and pass for 1,000 yards in a season, proved he still draws fans and an estimated 400 of the faithful turned out at Pearl River Resort to honor their man for his induction into the Southern Miss Hall of Fame. Collier, a native of Biloxi, who played in the USFL and NFL, was joined by other standouts such as RAY GUY, a first-round punter selection for the Oakland Raiders in the NFL draft and a stand-out at Southern Miss. The Gold Moon's Casino's Legends of Sports, was staged by Southern Miss assistant athletic director DICK VOGEL, JASON YORK, director of marketing for Pear River Resort, and RUDY LARSON, executive host, and their staffs. It included a festive weekend of dinners, blackjack and golf tournaments. Pearl River Resort has a big entertainment weekend coming up with top name stars. On April 3rd, Al Green, the great soul and gospel legend, will appear on April 3rd at the Silver Star Convention Center, and one night later, April 5th, The Oak Ridge Boys will perform.

HARLOW's in GREENVILLE is giving away a SMART CAR. Smart people know what I'm talking about. If you're smart, you'll check out the story in this issue.

SOUTHLAND is giving away a FORD- 150 truck on April 12 when 10 winners of drawings every Saturday until then will have a shot at this popular vehicle. One will pick a key that unlocks it. Also at Southland, on St. Patrick's' day, a minimum wager of $20 gets you a free t-shirt. Check out all the happenings in this issue.

New model homes are now open for home buyers at TUNICA NATIONAL COMMUNITY. The development, just south of Tunica National Golf and Tennis Club, has completed a detached condo in SOLEIL and a model home in GALLERY WALK. Stop by the sales office at the Founders House just inside the front gate for a tour or call (662) 363-9510. The office is open on weekends at 10 a.m. and during the week from 9-5. You can also visit TunicaNationalCommunity.com. Stop by and be impressed.

At BALLY'S, its 2X Cash Back on Tuesdays in March. You must play with a valid Destination Club card to receive 2X cash back, so check your wallet to see.

HOLLYWOOD is giving away Plasma TV's this month on Saturdays, but looking ahead, the casino will be giving away Garmin Street Pilots in April. Win one of these on a Saturday in April and you'll never get lost again! I need one.

There is still time to make plans for the big one at HORSESHOE. Plan to get over and sign up for the $250,000 LEGENDARY BLACKJACK TOURNAMENT. You can enter by giving up a $1,000 buy-in at the Bluesville promotions counter and if you are an early bird sign-up on Thursday, March 27 you will get a $100 chip back. Regular registration is Friday, March 28 from 7 to 9 p.m., and the action starts Saturday at 9 p.m. Second place pays a healthy $50,000 and third $25,000. The event is limited to 250 players and the top 45 players between the combined two qualifying rounds will receive $500 and be entered into the semi-finals. Call (800) 371-7568 to reserve your spot.

And remember, at HORSESHOE on Saturday, March 19 is when random jackpots will be hitting between 12 p.m. and 7 p.m. If you are on a machine, you could win up to $10,000.
