Heard it on the river: Autumn schedule is full of horses, chicken and golf

8 September 2008

The only place in the area where parimutuel gaming is allowed is in the WINNING EDGE sports book at SOUTHLAND PARK in West Memphis and now the racing and gaming facility is upgrading and moving the simulcast operation up a flight to the mezzanine.

GM TROY KEEPING said the park was consolidating racing operations and at the same time decided to upgrade the room in its new location with new cubicles with flat screen television sets in each, smoking and non-smoking areas, private teller lines and greater access to a wide selection of simulcast thoroughbred races around the country. The facility will open in November.

The chickens are back but this time they are playing tic-tac-toe at SHERATON CASINO. The lines were long at the recent debut of the cluckers but beating the birds was not as easy as frying them. If you think you are smarter than the birdbrain, think again, but you can find out now through Oct. 7 to win a share of $100,000 in free slot play. If you beat a chicken, you win $100 in free slot play but will also be entered into the $35,000 FINAL CHICKEN CHALLENGE. The action is from noon to 8 pm. Not chicken feed. Also at the Sheraton this month on Saturdays you can win a share of over $26,000 in free slot play in the PLUG INTO WINNING ELECTRONICS giveaway. First place is $10,000 in free slot play.

Congratulations to cs2 (Carpenter,Sullivan) the progressive Memphis-based advertising and public relations firm for winning the prize account to represent the TUNICA CONVENTION & CONVENTION BUREAU. I've had dealings with this agency and all to the positive. CVB BOSS WEBSTER FRANKLIN said the firm was selected for its extensive tourism, hospitality and gaming experience. They will do the strategic counseling and creative work not only for the CVB but for Tunica Riverpark, Tunica Airport, Tunica Arena and Expo Center and the Tunica National Golf and Tennis Club. Looks like a good fit for all parties.

It was a bit scary down on the Gulf Coast as hurricane GUSTAV provided some anxious hours with memories of catastrophic KATRINA still fresh in the mindS of inhabitants from New Orleans to Biloxi. The brunt of the storm was missed but heavy rains and the storm surge helped cause some ground floor flooding in several casinos but they all were open a few days later. "It's business as usual," GM JOHN LUCAS of IP CASINO told us in a telephone call to the GOODTIMES RADIO SHOW. IP was prepared... it was the first casino to open on the Coast after Katrina and was rea dy for Gus.

The U.S BLIND GOLFERS ASSOCIATIONS is holding its 63rd championship at RIVER BEND LINKS behind Hollywood Casino on Sept. 22-23 and volunteer scorekeepers and fore caddies are needed. Just call ANNE COGGINS at 662-363-3800 to give a helping hand and extra eyes for this challenging event.

The NGA HOOTERS PRO-AM golf event is set for Sept. 23 at the challenging DANCING RABBIT GOLF CLUB at PEARL RIVER RESORT and your favorite columnist has been invited to take on the professionals. Woe unto me. I won't be able to move my ball on the fairway, kick it to a better lie in the rough, push it from behind trees with my club head or ground my club in the sand traps. It won't be any fun at all playing by the rules. After the pro-am the real golfers take over and play for $200,000 in cash prizes from Sept. 25-28. There will be 168 in the field on the AZALEAS course there that was just ranked number 32 by GOLF MAGAZINE on its list of the top 100 courses in the USA. The event is open to the public free and it's a good opportunity to see the PGA tour players of the future.

If you want to see some top level poker players at work, the MID-SOUTH POKER OPEN is on at HARRAH'S through Sept. 14. Winners of certai n events will automatically be entered into the 1st BATTLE OF THE BEST POKER tournament players pitting Harrah's players against Horseshoe players on Sept. 26 with the winner taking home a free entry into the 2009 WORLD SERIES OF POKER MAIN EVENT in Vegas.

Through Nov. 29 you can win a piece of the $250,000 FITZ FULL OF DOLLARS II promo. The event takes place on Friday and Saturday's and you can earn entries all week long. There are 80 winners each weekend. The popular next FIGHTS AT THE FITZ, is Sept. 27 and is always sold out. Call 901-525-1515.

FROM THE QUOTABLE GAMBLER, The Lyons Press

During a hot roll at a crap table a Southerner leaned over and shook a fist of encouragement at me. "Cut ya sef a new piece a bait," he said, "and fish a little deeper.
