Heard it on the River

16 January 2004

If you like big money table game tournaments then you are in luck because the cash is flowing in February in Tunica Resorts for lovers of blackjack and craps. It begins with BALLY'S great ULTIMATE BLACKJACK TOURNAMENT on Feb. 6-8 for a total of $125,000 in prize money with first place a guaranteed $50,000. However, this popular long-time event usually draws more than 200 players and the prize money is increased when that happens. Two weeks later, players have to make a choice but since blackjack players and craps players do not cross over a lot, the choice is not difficult. GOLDSTRIKE is offering its second MISSISSIPPI CRAPS TOURNAMENT with $50,000 in prize money and the $25,000 first place money is guaranteed. The same weekend GRAND CASINO has in place its LEAP INTO CASH blackjack tournament with $100,000 in prize money. The first place prize of $50,000 is guaranteed.

The corporate identify change for Park Place Entertainment to CAESARS ENTERTAINMENT is not fresh news anymore but we got this local reaction from JON LUCAS, who is president, the TUNICA CASINO GROUP (Grand, Sheraton, Bally's) for CE.

"Research shows that the Caesars brand is the most powerful brand in gaming, and one of the best known brands of any kind in the world. We believe that adopting Caesars Entertainment as our new corporate name will quickly and clearly identify the company to those who do not know us. Our intent is to strengthen our position as a global leader in the gaming industry, drive increased recognition of the company and further our corporate objectives and strategy.

"Linking our corporate identity to the Caesars name also will ease our entry into new markets and facilitate new relationships with partners, vendors and sponsors. For all these reasons, becoming Caesars Entertainment clearly is the right thing to do."

Look for a final site plan to be submitted to the County soon from developers who are proposing the huge NASCAR type track at a location on Highway 61 about 7 miles south of Tunica Resorts. Rezoning has been approved and now the group is busy putting together the money that will finance the track, according to Memphis attorney JIM LOCKARD, spokesman. A bond issue is in the works. No members of the group have been publicly identified but look for a surprise name to pop up when they are made public.

FAIRBANKS has always been a great restaurant in Tunica Resorts and it just got better at Hollywood now that it is offering PASSPORT TO THE ORIENT on its menu. Chinese entrees prepared by CHEF YUE ZHONG now include Chinese Surf & Turf, Hong Kong Lobster and Peking Duck, among others.

We heard that GOLDSTRIKE CASINO is planning a $100,000 slot tournament with a limit of 100 entries for May. We'll get more on this later.

The JACK BINION WORLD POKER OPEN still has some legs on its three week run in Tunica Resorts and you want to go by and check out the action at GOLDSTRIKE in the second floor ballroom and especially the Jan. 26-29 Texas Hold'em No Limit championship finals where a million bucks is up for grabs. The WORLD POKER TOUR will be taping the finals for later viewing during the year so grab a seat and a chance to be on TV. Save me seat.

HOLLYWOOD CASINO now accepts RAPID REFUND. In addition to cashing tax refund checks this year, Hollywood will accept Rapid Refund checks if specific player account criteria is met. Guests who do not have an established player's account may cash a Rapid Refund check for up to $500 with a valid I.D. And, if winter golf is your thing, you might want to check out Hollywood's special Feb. golf packages at River Bend links that includes a one-night stay, green fee and cart for 18 holes. The casino's hotel also sports a new look for 2004, having just completed an $8 million renovation for its 437 standard guest rooms. The 12th floor was also converted to 12 two-room suites.

Get your tickets now for the 2004 U.S. OLYMPIC BOXING TRIALS to be held at the PAUL BATTLE ARENA Feb. 17-21 when 143 fights will be held to determine our team for the summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. Ticketmaster is the place.

HARRAH'S has reached an agreement in principle with the owners of BINION'S HORSESHOE HOTEL & CASINO to acquire the downtown property in Vegas. GOLDEN TOUCH BLACKJACK is coming to Tunica Resorts in July to present a blackjack instructional course based on what they call a "revolutionary new method of advantage play called Speed Count." Here come the counter measures. More on this later.

If you like ELVIS tribute artists, and who doesn't, check out TRAVIS LEDOYT who has had his gig at HARRAH'S extended. And a jackpot struck twice at Harrah's recently when LISA GROVES of Columbia, SC, won $10,000 twice on the same quarter machine one day apart. Don't get your hopes up, it's all random.

FROM THE QUOTABLE GAMBLER…The Lyons Press

"Going to the bathroom during a poker or dice game is a mistake. You might miss a hot hand worth a hundred thousand, and nothing in the bathroom is worth that much."

Nick "The Greek" Dandalos, quoted in Cy Rice, Nick the Greek: King of Gamblers (1969)
