TUNICARESORTS…SPORTS CAPITAL OF THE MID-SOUTH

Has a nice ring to it and may sound farfetched right now but the county is on the right road to positioning itself as a sporting destination. Some thing have to fall in place, like $100 million for the proposed TUNICA MOTORSPORTS track complex but let's look at our glass as half full right now with what we've got. The PAUL BATTLE JR. ARENA hosts many sporting events and is gaining a rep for it, so much so, that the 2004 OLYMPIC BOXING TRIALS will be held there Feb. 16-21, Tickets, by the way, are now on sale. On Dec. 18, a state-of-the art boxing center is opening behind the Arena. It will be used for the Olympic hopefuls but long range it is intended for our youth. And the pro fights at SAM'S TOWN will get back on track on Jan. 24 and be once-a-month attractions. Thus far these monthly events have sold out.

If you like golf and tennis, TUNICA NATIONAL will open soon, and it will give the county three terrific golf courses. Hunting has always been an attraction here but has became a bigger attraction with guided quail and deer hunts behind GRAND CASINO which also provides one of the top skeet and trap shooting facilities in the USA with its WILLOWS facility. We also heard that something of impact may be coming to Grand in the future that will go a long way to attracting more folks to visit hereabouts.

Of course if the track becomes reality, as its backers say, it will lead to more development as supporting facilities will be needed, not to mention more hotel rooms. Even without a NEXTEL CUP event, there will other events at the track to make it a success, according to JIM LOCKARD, the Memphis lawyer who is president of Tunica Motorsports,Inc. We all hope so.

Our local pugilist, heavyweight RAY LUNSFORD, will be back in action Jan. 24 at Sam's Town Fight Night.

If you want convenient shopping for Christmas gifts, look no further than right here in TUNICA RESORTS where the CASINO FACTORY SHOPPES have just about anything you'll need to put under the tree. There is a great mix of retail stores there and to give you an idea how about Gap, Polo, Reebok, Chicago Cutlery,OskKosh, Nautica, Izod's and Etienne Aigner, just to name a few. It's located on conveniently on Highway 61 and has something other malls don't…lots of close in parking.

Something I wish I had won…BILL DANCE'S fully-rigged Pro Craft Bass Boat at Hollywood Casino. Got beat out by lucky HENRY RIGLER of Benton, AR. Hollywood keeps alive its long standing support of ST. JUDE'S with a sponsorship of the 2003 Liberty Bowl that will feature a game between Southern Miss. And Utah on Dec. 31 I n Memphis.

Try Asian cuisine for a holiday dining change of fare and seek out YASMIN'S at Horseshoe. You will not be disappointed but get a reservation for this experience and call SHARON at 800-303-7463, ext. 5480. Looks like the JACK BINION WORLD POKER OPEN is set for another record attendance year. Wonder if the $1million guaranteed for first place in the championship event has anything to do with it?

The WPO begins play in the ballroom at GOLDSTRIKE on Jan. 6 and concludes on Jan 29. Co-sponsored by Goldstrike and Horseshoe, there is still time to enter. Just call 1-800-303-7463 or 662-357-5500, ext. 5760. Speaking of poker, MIKE SEXTON, co-host of the WORLD POKER TOUR will be a live guest on the GOODTIMES RADIO SHOW this Saturday, Dec. 13 between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. You can listen in at WMC790 A.M., Memphis or on the internet at AUDIOVEGAS.COM, where it is also archived. If you want to talk to Mike, call in at 901-274-7979.

Gifts we'd like to see under their Christmas trees….$100 million for Tunica Motorsports, another world championship fight to promote for Brian Young, an upsurge in room reservation orders that will force hotel expansion for several casinos ,a shopping center with a full service grocery store for our northern county residents, more tips for our dealers, serving staff and cage employees, loose slots and peace and goodwill
For everybody.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM JACKPOT MAGAZINE, MISSISSIPPI GAMING NEWS AND THE GOODTIMES RADIO SHOW.
