Heard it on the River

21 August 2003

There is still a lot of local buzz on the purported sale of Horseshoe with the list of wooers on the rise. When we last reported to you, AMERISTAR was supposedly on top of that list but since then we've heard MGM might be in the mix and one or two others. Who wouldn't want to own this company? But I still hate the thought of JACK BINION moving out. Not a lot of legends around these days but he certainly qualifies. Say it isn't so, Jack.

But there is another legend at the Horseshoe. GEORGE KLEIN, he of the deep and melodious voice, got a lot of ink in recent days, as he should. We were reminded of GK's presence, he's an executive host, with the sad passing of SAM PHILLIPS; George was part of same scene with another guy name of Elvis during the great years of Sam's music in Memphis.

I visited the 'Shoe recently to check out the mood and it was upbeat, as always. Everybody was more concerned with his or her work and any worry about a change in ownership had diminished considerably. Nobody was missing a beat in the CAFÉ SONOMA where manager SCOTT PAPA was on station. This fine restaurant might slip under the radar of some visitors but it has undergone considerable improvement and the menu and the quality of food it represents these days is substantial. Anything that is wood fired is great but Papa's tip was to try the absolutely wonderful assorted seafood offering served on a cedar plank with garlic-mashed potatoes.

We reported in our previous column that PARK PLACE ENTERTAINMENT was about to roll out its new CONNECTION CARD that will tie in customers to all its properties. We heard right on that scoop and the process is now underway. STEVE ROSEN, senior vice president of marketing says that by December the program will take in all 18 of the company's properties in the US. PPE win's our coveted "ATTABOY AWARD" this month with the awarding of three $2,400 scholarships to the children of three employees. PPE Tunica President Jon Lucas handed out the awards to ELEENAW JEFFERSON, her father is SPENCER at Grand, to DIVYA VARGHEESE, mother is SHIRLEY at Sheraton, and to CRYSTAL WILSON, daughter of NASH at Bally's.

It's football season, at last, and GOLDSTRIKE is again offering its $200,000 FOOTBALL FRENZY, which proved very popular last fall/winter. You can pick up your entry in the second floor poker room Sports Corner booth for your chance to win weekly cash prizes that have a first place amount of $2,500. Just make sure you bring your One Club card with you. It's a free.

The new and very attractive RIVERPARK will open soon and GM DOM MEZZETTA of neighboring FITZGERALDS, says lots of inquiries are already flowing in for the attraction on the banks of the mighty Mississippi." It will be a wonderful addition for the entire county and I think its impact will be tremendous." I think you're right on, Dom. We visited another nice new development, the Tunica airport, and it was pleasing to see so many aircraft there already and the terminal was not even open. We peeked inside and it was an impressive sight that looks like it will be ready for the day when commercial traffic starts using it. It would be a lot easier to find for first timers, however, if larger more obvious signage was put in place on Highway 61. If you miss the lone symbol sign, turn left after Fred's in Tunica when coming in from the north

FOUR CARD POKER…you read about it here last issue and having played it some more at SHERATON, I still stand by my prediction that this will be a hit with players. It didn't hurt that on my second hand I drew a straight flush that paid off 30-1. It is also at SAM'S TOWN, and will soon be introduced at GRAND CASINO. HOLLYWOOD now offers its PROGRESSIVE 21 table game, blackjack with a progressive jackpot added with no side bet required.

This is old news but still worth some ink…. LINDA LEMASTER from South Carolina was celebrating her 27th wedding anniversary with her hubby at SAM'S TOWN when the celebration got somewhat noisy. She was getting ready to head for her room in the wee hours of the morning when she plunked in the last three dollars she intended to play and you know the rest of the story. It hit for $2,861,426 on the IGT WHEEL OF FORTUNE MEGAJACKPOTS. It may be a tight game to play, but life-changing jackpots make it worthwhile.

Don't forget the Russians are coming. On Nov. 22 the US BOXING TEAM will slug it out with Ivan at Sam's Town. The Russkies are the top ranked amateur team in the world.

I don't see any homeless folks wandering around the cotton fields of TUNICA RESORTS so I guess we can't qualify for this dubious designation. LAS VEGAS has been dubbed the meanest city in American for homeless people. The ranking was handed out by the National Coalition for the Homeless, which I guess enjoys a home in Washington DC. Wonder how much their lobbyist makes?

The very popular WORLD POKER TOUR has signed up again with the TRAVEL CHANNEL to stage the second season of the series with options for five more seasons of the program that is help making Texas Hold 'em the most popular poker game in the country and attracting hosts of new players.

FROM THE QUOTABLE GAMBLER…The Lyons Press

"Sometimes when you win, you really lose. Sometimes when you lose, you really win. Sometimes when you tie, you actually win or lose, and sometimes when you win or lose, you actually tie….Winning and losing is all one big globule from which one extracts what one needs."
