Heard it on the River

9 July 2003

Gripes, gripes, gripes...you hear so many players griping (is it because they are losing?) that you wonder how casino employees can stand it. We decided to level the playing field and asked some table games dealers what their gripes were about players...that's fair turnabout. We will print some starting with this column and if you, the player, recognize yourself, so be it.

One complaint that seemed common to dealers was players who gripe and do not tip. After all, dealers make a great deal of their income from tips so we can understand this one. Tip your dealer! Another one that seemed to hit dealer's hot buttons was players blowing smoke in their faces. I know that casinos are the last bastion for smokers but think of those poor dealers who are subjected to your exhaust fumes, hour in and hour out. Casinos have excellent air cleaning systems in place but please, blow your noxious emissions up in the air or downwind. And one more item worth mentioning is players who blame the dealers for losing cards. Remember folks, the dealer is only the messenger, killing him/her verbally will not cure your bad luck. Look up the meaning of gambling if you don't get my drift.

We will have a few more gripes in future issues but if you have a good one that applies to players, email it in confidence to me at goodtimesradio@aol.com and we will consider it. Your name will not be used.

It's a little early for this one but since I am going to take a shot at my first poker tournament, I thought it worth mentioning. The "SENIORS" World Championship of Poker will be held at GRAND CASINO OCT. 9-18. DALE CARDEN, poker room manager, says early registration is advised. Players must have been born before Jan. 1954, the year I was graduated from Boston Technical, so I guess I qualify.

We heard that the Air Center at Tunica's new airport should be operational next month. Construction on extension of the runway from 5,500 feet to 7,000 feet should also begin soon. The opening of the TUNICA NATIONALGOLF COURSE is still set for Labor Day and the RIVERPARK opening for August 1 and then you can sail the Mississippi on the TUNICA QUEEN from its dock at the park.

LB's Steakhouse at Grand will launch a new menu sometime next month but if you want a preview of it, check out the feature story in this issue. And here is some different entertainment that will make a good run in Tunica. HORSESHOE is hosting the IMPERIAL CIRCUS OF CHINA July 23-27. Considered one of the best on- stage circuses in the world, it has unique blend of circus arts and theatrics together with exotic costumes, acrobatics, dance, and more. If you like fireworks, on July 4th PEARL RIVER RESORT in Philadelphia, MS is putting on a blitz along with a special Red, White and Blues concert on July 3rd.

Congratulations to HORSESHOE CASINO staff who helped a great deal to make the 10TH ANNUAL JOHN DALY MAKE-A-WISH golf tournament and auction another huge success. This event has raised millions over the years. Never saw so many celebrities and missed most of them but did catch BARRYSWITZER, JOHN CALIPARI, NOLAN RICHARDSON, WESLEYWALLS, and of course, the one and only GEORGE KLEIN. Heard JOE PESCHI was there also. What about diminutive JOHN MICHAELSISINNI, only 11 this 60-pounder and he was on the first place team. With the coaching of John Daly and the backing of PAPA JOHN, the 'Shoe's VP of Player Development, the future looks bright as he continues to gobble up championships.
