Heard it on the River

17 April 2003

We've gone through a month or so slinging slugs at SADDAM and his motley crew but apparently, at least from what we hear from various Tunica gaming execs, the war in Iraq has not had much of a ripple effect on our casinos here. If our national economy ever gets back on track, better days are ahead.

JOHN PHILLIP, the new GM at SAM'S TOWN, says the casino is installing a new slot tracking system and undertaking a major remodeling of the employee dining room...good news for all concerned. Phillipp has the distinction of being the first non-Boyd exec to be placed in a GM position there in 43 years.

You should know by now that BALLY'S is hosting its great bi-annual ULTIMATE BLACKJACK tournament on April 25-27 with a projected $125,000 in prize money but what you don't know is that sister property, GRAND TUNICA, ups the ante on June 6-8 with its $300,000 WORLD SERIES of BLACKJACK. You can still register for Bally's by calling 1-800-38BALLY, ext. 1511, and get more info on Grand's event by calling 1-800-550-4437 and use the code word ACE.

You may have already heard this in the news but if you missed it a bill to expand electronic wagering over the river in Arkansas failed to clear a House committee. Bad news for Oaklawn Park and Southland Greyhound Park but good news for Tunica.

If you live in the Southaven, Horn Lake area you may want to try out the new PEPPERONI PIZZA on West Church Road in front of Northwest Community college operated by George "Mav." It will open on April 28.

There's a millionaire coming to Tunica but I don't know if he is a gambler. JOE MILLIONAIRE'S EVAN MARRIOTT is scheduled to appear at GRAND'S REPLAYS SPORTS BAR on Friday, May 2 at 10 p.m. ladies. In his former life Evan was a $19,000 a year construction worker and got the million bucks from the TV show he was on that hooked him up with some choice babes who he had to con into believing he was a millionaire. Also coming to a PARK PLACE ENTERTAINMENT CASINO near you later this year will be PARK PLACE MILLIONS slots which the developer, ALLIANCE GAMING, says will offer progressive jackpots starting at a cool $1 million.

GOLDSTRIKE turns Mexican on May 5 with its CINCO de MAYO celebration. It's a Mexican fiesta that we have adopted since we like any sort of a party and on the 5th and the preceeding weekend, the casino have a strolling mariachi band, traditional Mexican food selections and Mexican decor in the house.Speaking of food at Goldstrike, its ATRIUM CAFE has supplemented its regular menu with what it calls "healthy alternatives." F&B Director LUCIO ARANCIBIA, says the casino is just meeting the demands of its guests for such food including sugar free desserts. And Goldstrike's foray into having weddings on the property has taken a new turn. The GOLDEN HEARTS CHAPEL had initially been introduced as a temporary one but because of a stronger-than-expected response the venue is now a permanent fixture. All they need now is a singing Elvis.

HOLLYWOOD has just completed converting 24 rooms into 12 suites and is halfway done with its guest room renovation and expects to complete the upgrade this fall. Is there a NASCAR track coming to Tunica? We heard this before and we are hearing it again and there might even be a casino involved...mmmm.

FIGHT NIGHTS are back on at SAM'S TOWN with monthly live boxing starting this Saturday (April 19) with a Mid-South JR middleweight championship match featuring CLINT MCNEIL and DAMIEN TURNER and a 6 bout undercard including John (Not the GM) Phillips vs. RAY LUNSFORD. Promoter BRIAN YOUNG, he of the Lewis-Tyson fight fame, is putting on the fights. Young is also involved in seeking the 2004 USA Olympic Boxing Trials for Tunica with the PAUL BATTLE JR. Arena as a possible site.

You can now listen to the only live gaming radio show in the South on the internet on goodtimesradio.com every Saturday from 9:30 to noon. Just click on "listen to us" and you are transported to Audiovegas.com and the live streaming broadcast. Or just tune in to WMC790 AM to hear it.
