Heard it on the River

3 April 2003

In springtime, a young man's fancy may turn to thoughts of romance, whatever, but mine zero in on blackjack, tournament style. I must be getting old when blackjack is my lust. Unlike romance, however, it's only for a weekend with a chance of winning some big money instead of spending it on some young thing. The affair I have in mind is BALLY'S ALL-AMERICAN $125,000 ULTIMATE BLACKJACK TOURNAMENT, the 16th in its series of Ultimate Blackjack events.

The event, which usually draws more than 200 players, offers a $50,000 guaranteed first prize with the rest of the pot divvied up according to the total amount of registered players. Most of these big-money tournaments are by invitation only, which is a heck of a deal for an invited player, but Bally's is open to the public, at least those willing to make the $500 entry fee, which covers a weekend of entertainment, lodging, food and parties. Register by calling (800) 38-BALLY, ext. 1511. See you there!

Speaking of blackjack tournaments, JOHN CHAI, one of the better tournament players in the country, took home the first-place money of $12,500 from an invitation-only event staged by GRAND CASINO. A total of 153 players competed for $25,000 in prize money with ROBERT DILLEY taking second place for $5,000.

New table games are cropping up in TUNICA with the latest being "3-Way Action" at HOLLYWOOD. This newcomer offers three games in one ... WAR, BLACKJACK and FIVE-CARD STUD POKER. The game is played on a standard blackjack table and is played with a single deck that is shuffled after every hand. The three games involve three wagers and are played independently, but in succession, and the amount bet may vary.

A husband and wife chef team has joined SAM'S TOWN with a mandate to heighten the attraction of the ASIAN station in the GREAT BUFFET. They are GEORGE (Cheng Lun Yuan) and WENDY(Jieng Lor-Wu) and they will introduce some new dishes for the station's new look. Did you know that you can dance at ROXY'S LIVE at Sam's Town Tuesday through Sunday nights? If you like motorcycles, then plan on coming to the Sam's Town 2nd Annual Motorcycle Festival on May 2-4. Watch for a full announcement here in JACKPOT! In July, the casino will sponsor DELTARIVER CRUISING, a street rod show on July 11-13.

When FRANK SCOBLETE staged the first Sharpshooter craps festival at Sam's Town recently, the event attracted some 118 players from 16 states, as well as a lot of spouses, nearly 200 folks in all.

Executives, don't forget that registration is now open for the SOUTHERN GAMING SUMMIT in BILOXI on May 7-8. Go to www.sgsummit.com for more info.

An exciting development is nearing completion on the banks of the Mississippi River just a short walk from FITZGERALDS. Scheduled to open in a few months, the TUNICA RIVER PARK is an important attraction not only for Tunica, but for the region. When the 213-acre park is complete, it will have cost $25 million. I was checking out the new park's progress recently and came across this old sign leaning up against a truck. It's a portent of things to come.

FROM THE QUOTABLE GAMBLER ... The Lyons Press

"Some people lost their heads cold sober. Cards, dice, pool; it makes no difference. You want to make a living that way, you want to be a winner, you got to keep your head. And you got to remember that there's a loser somewhere in you, whining at you, and you got to learn to cut his water off."

-- BERT in Walter Tevis, The Hustler (1959)
