Heard it on the river

29 December 2006

As we move into the New Year, we took a moment to look at the progress of the TUNICA CONVENTION & VISITORS BUREAU in 2006 and under the aggressive leadership of WEBSTER FRANKLIN; the accomplishments of the CVB were nothing less than phenomenal.

Who wouldn't want a paycheck for life? I guess a grand a week would make my life a little better but being an old trooper is not as good as winning this one when you are 21 or so. Here's a chance for all you youngsters from 21 to 101 to put some juice in your life. If you stop by the FITZ, you can enter the PAYCHECK FOR LIFE by cashing your real paycheck there and get a scratch card. Hit five identical symbols and your life will be transformed, forever. And, if you miss, there is a second chance for prizes up to $500. Besides the lifer prize, there are secondary awards as well for $50,000, $5,000 and $1,000. Rules apply so get the rules info at the Fitz casino cage. The promo runs while supplies of the prize cards last, or until July 1, 2008, whichever is first. Coming at the Fitz on Jan. 20 is another in the series of Fight Night at the Fitz but this time the boxing will be shown live to over a half million homes in the southeast via COMCAST. It will be another sellout so get your tickets early at the Gift Shop.

DON BARDEN, the owner of Fitz and other properties, got a nice birthday present recently. The cigar-smoking gaming magnate and entrepreneur announced his company has been awarded a license to build a $455 million slot casino in Pittsburgh on his 63rd birthday. Happy Birthday, Don. His casino properties are now valued at over $1 billion.

Visiting BALLY'S recently I was happy to run into SUSAN CRISTOU whose new job as director of table games belies her appearance, that of a high fashion European model. Whatever happened to dose guys, like Tony and Looey, in da pits? Up from the Isle of Capri in Lula, she is a nice upgrade and knows her business as well. JO ANN HOUSE, casino host, is another pro at Bally's who treats strange faces like old friends.

Wonder why I still get an occasional new "can't lose" slot system offer in the mail? Don't even spend a minute thinking about it, or even spending a penny on one. You will waste your time and your money. No so-called system can defeat the edge the house has over the long run.

Two of the busiest people in Tunica this month will be KAREN KAEGEN at GRAND and KEN LAMBERT at GOLD STIKE. Their friendly little poker rooms will be turned over with any available space for two huge tournaments that make Tunica the poker capital or the world. The WSOP makes a circuit stop at Grand and the WPO, part of the World Poker Tour, will be in the ballroom at Gold Strike. Fun to watch and free. Stop in.

"DEAL OR NO DEAL" comedian and host of the popular TV game show, HOWIE MANDEL, will be at the Grand on March 31. Ticketmaster, 901-525-1515.

CALVIN STURGEON won't have to mend fences anymore. The fence builder from Birmingham slammed a FAMILY FEUD quarter machine at GOLDEN MOON, the CHOCTAWS great casino at Pearl River for $323,014 recently. Says he is going to save the money, Sure. It was the fifth IGT Megajackpot hit at Golden Moon in 2006 with the total over $8 million. If you have an Elvis costume and happen to be near Pearl River on Friday, Jan. 5, you can enter a look-a-like contest. If not, stop by anyway to take the Elvis Tribute concert featuring BRANDON BENNET, who is a clone of the King. He is good that he won the "2002 International Images of the King World Champion." For more info and tickets call 1-866-44PEARL.

HARRAH'S HAMS made a lot of needy families happy over the holidays. The corporation distributed hundreds of big spiral cut hams to lower-income residents in Shelby, DeSoto and Tunica counties. It was part of its H.E.R.O. (Harrah's Entertainment Reaching Out) program that his past year involved about 511 HERO volunteers who donated their time to 43 charitable causes. They all get my coveted ATTABOY AWARD.

TUNICA NATIONAL, the master planned community built around the Tunica National Golf & Tennis Club, is now taking priority reservations for its first phase, GALLERY WALK. The developers have also announced an agreement with PRATT & ASSOCIATES from Chattanooga, to be the exclusive builder for the Gallery Walk. CODY HARRELL, a partner, said Gallery Walk "will set the standard for residential development in the entire region." For more information call 662-363-9510.

FROM THE QUOTABLE GAMBLER, The Lyons Press

Life is a game of poker, played well or ill;
Some hold four aces, some draw or fill;
Some make a bluff, and oft get there,
While others ante and never hold a pair.
