Heard It On The River

6 October 2006

Putting your money where you county is, a lot of praise can be sung these days for Tunica County officials who had the foresight to make a unique deal with the Mississippi Dept. of Transportation to complete the new I-69 link from I-55 to Highway 61 three years ahead of time. It will bring immense economic development to the region as tourists and gaming customers have a faster, safer and easier access way to the County.

It was no coincidence but at about the same time the highway opened, a master planned community broke ground that will result in the largest residential community in Tunica County. Two young entrepreneurs, CODY HARRELL and MATT DUNN, figure they have a jump start on what they call "the start of a residential boom" in the County. The $25 million mixed use development is already selling lots even though the infrastructure has to be completed first. The 268-acres surrounding TUNICA NATIONAL GOLF & TENNIS CLUB, will have up to 700 new homes and 600 apartment/condo units with a town center featuring retail shopping and office space. Sounds like a good place for me to retire. I can have my own golf cart and take the shuttle to my favorite gambling spots. If you want to learn more, go online at www.tunicanationalcommunity.com or call 662-363-9510. If you have grimace over your property tax bill, this is place that you will make you smile when it comes to taxes, or lack of them.

The $1 MILLON IN A BAG promotion is now underway at Grand, Horseshoe and Sheraton casinos. During the promotion, a total of 30 winners from the three casinos will win a chance to enter the $1million giveaway drawing to be held in Las Vegas on Dec. 3. In addition to the grand prize there will be cash prizes for $1,000 to $50,000. For more on this eye-opener, go to www.totalrewards.com/inthebag

As you know, I find Tunica's games to be very attractive, and to date, very rewarding. Great odds, great comps and great times. But when I venture from this safe heaven I turn the nose of my SUV south to PEARL RIVER RESORT. A round of golf at THE DANCING RABBIT CLUB is a must and this is a great time of year to stroll through the fall color-tinted forests bordering the course. When not gambling, eating is the second biggest attraction at casinos, and the Resort has 16 restaurants to feed your inner person, including the new RIB JOINT and TUSCANO's, and one of my favorites, GALAXY, on the 25th floor inside the unique and huge geodesic dome that dominates the countryside of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians. CHEF PAUL NORTON knows how to prepare MAHI MAHI and other fresh seafood delights FEDEXed from Honolulu. There is also the Silver Star across the road, a salon, a new poker room in the GOLDEN MOON, a great walk-in humidor and more. The more includes the first qualifying tournament for the NATIONAL THREE CARD POKER TOURNAMENT. The next and last qualifying round takes place at the Silver Star on Nov. 3-5 and those who qualify, receive $1,000 in cash, travel expenses, hotel accommodations and a seat in the national championship where first place pays off to the wonderful tune of ONE MILLION BUCKS. It's a must tournament so call 1-866-44PEARL.

There is a great free show happening at the FITZ on Oct. 13-14 with three nightly shows. SATISFACTION'S TRIBUTE…a Rolling Stones Experience, will be on the stage bar and rock the joint. They play all the Stone's great classic songs but the amazing thing is that they have two artists who look almost exactly like MICK JAGGER and KEITH RICHARDS. From the photos, I could not tell the difference. What they sound like, well, you have to attend the show to find out. Later in the month, the casino will stage another of its very popular FIGHTS AT THE FITZ live in the ballroom. The five bout card will feature Super Middleweight contender Rowland Bryant (13-0, 9 KO's) taking on Billy Thompson (8-6, 3 KO's) Local favorite, PEPE RUBIO, will fight RUDY PAZ. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door.

If you have been within earshot of GRAND CASINO and it sounds like an invasion is going on, it's only the sound of shotguns being fired at live quail and sporting clays at the WILLOWS sporting clays and hunter center reserve behind the levee. The sporting clay range, one of the best in the USA, is always open but the quail season just started. The quail area covers some 350 acres of cropland, wetlands, and wooded areas and it's a long season. You have access to guides and bird dogs for a wonderful experience. Make your reservations by calling 662-357-3154.

Grand poker dealer HARRY DUSKIN, who beat 32 other dealers in the first ever dealer tournament was rewarded with an all expenses paid trip to Sin City where he represented his property in the 1st Annual World Poker Dealer Tournament. And he fared quite well finishing third in Omaha Eight and fourth in Limit Hold 'em, winning more than $2,500. At sister property, HORSESHOE, they were playing a different tune at a one night competition for employees of Grand, Sheraton and the 'Shoe. And the winner is, CAROLYN WRIGHT, the front desk manager at the Veranda Hotel whose soulful renditions of "Summer Time" topped the talented field. Grand's BECCA ASHWORTH came in second and AUBREY BOYD of Horseshoe took third.

The PEARL RIVER RESORT CHRISTMAS CLASSIC, featuring no limit Texas hold 'em takes place on Dec.9 with a $2,000 buy-in, plus a$200 entry fee. Only 100 entries will be accepted and each player starts with 10,000 tournament chips. Prize money will be based on the number of entries but will be significant any way you cut the deck. Super satellites are now taking place on Sunday's at 4 p.m. If you are there on Oct. 14, take in the FOUR TOPS. Call 1-866-44PEARL.

Say it ain't so. It's been reported that HARRAH'S is reviewing an unsolicited proposal from two private equity firms who are said to be offering a whopping $15 billion to buy the corportion. Stay tuned.
