Heard It On The River

25 September 2006

Thousands of poker players are in town with more to come to play in THE WORLD SERIES OF POKER underway at GRAND CASINO RESORT. They may like the prize money on the table but the pot at the end of the rainbow is a free entry into the 2007 WSOP in Vegas. HARRAH'S, which owns and operates this prestigious tournament, made Grand the launching pad for the WSOP circuit events due the popularity of the game hereabouts and the excellent staff here under KARIN KAEGIN that has a proven track record in running big tournaments. The WSOP also includes a ladies event on Oct. 1 and the final table will conclude on Oct. 4.

The day before the final table takes place at GRAND, another big event takes place...the official opening of the new I-69 from I-55 that will download visitors to Tunica just yards north of the entrance to Grand. Too late for most of the poker crowd but a welcome way for tens on tens on tens of thousands folks in the future.

When you consider this project and other ones on the board, can you envision in about a decade a large town surrounding the casinos in the northern part of the county? I can and my crystal ball, slightly cracked from past prognostications, shows me a thriving region complete with new schools, shopping, sports, entertainment and other amenities. I guess that means more YANKEES moving in but these folks won't be carpetbaggers but settlers with cash to spend. Come on down.

JUANITA HILL-KENNEDY has a new job and it's a big one. She is now director of employment and recruiting for the Mid-South Region for HARRAH'S three casinos here, Grand, Horseshoe and Sheraton. She moves up from Grand Biloxi where she successfully spearheaded the company-wide effort to find placement for Harrah's employees on the Gulf Coast who were displaced by Hurricane Katrina. Atta girl, and good luck here.

GoodTimes radio show, now on at 8:30 a.m. every Saturday from COUNTRY LEGENDS WMC790 AM, will be on the road again, this time doing a remote broadcast on Oct. 7 from fabulous PEARL RIVER RESORT, operated by the Mississippi Band of Choctaws outside of Philadelphia, MS. We'll be part of the weekend MOSTER BASH there that is giving away $65,000 cash. VP of Marketing, CHRIS BARRON, told me to dust off my Halloween costume and get in the party later in the month, Oct. 28, that will have a $1,000 for the best outfit. I wonder if my lederhosen still fit that I wore to the Oktober Fest in Munich in 1960? Ach du lieber no. Have to stay away from those buffets, like the One Buck Buffet at Resorts that you earn for only one comp dollar.

My son, MICHAEL, heir to the Schiffer Fortune and my side kick on the GoodTimes show, was working his job in the Grand craps pit one night recently when he saw a gentleman line up three WHEEL OF FORTUNE symbols on a nearby machine that paid a stunning $1,674,053. The man, he said, was real nonchalant, not even shouting or jumping about. His big move was ordering some food while he sat and waited for the payoff. You can best it tasted real good.

Down the road a piece, in Jackson, Mississippi Gaming Commission Executive Director, LARRY GREGORY, told lawmakers during his recent annual budget presentation that "Gaming is back in our great state of Mississippi and is doing well." Nice to hear that but it never left in mid and northern Mississippi.

I play some blackjack at HOLLYWOOD CASINO on Fridays, my play day, and it was nice to hear the casino has a $25 blackjack spotlight bet for card holders from 6 to 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. You get a free bet for that amount if you are randomly selected and you can play on it until the dealer wins, if I read the rules right. On Oct. 2 and 23, the Kwik Kash slot tournaments are in play at Hollywood with $5,000 in prize money for each event. I like the changes that Exec Chef GARY REILLY made in the EPIC buffet there. Played on RIVER BEND adjacent to RESORTS and Hollywood recently and was impressed with the first class condition of this Scottish links type course.

I always am somewhat reluctant to play soft doubles in blackjack because it seems you largely depend on the dealer busting to make the hand. One of the reasons for my hesitance is that I am not so familiar with right moves, as I thought. So you think you know how to play basic strategy in blackjack better than me? Sure you do. Playing against a six or eight deck shoe, which of these hands should you double down with? A/5 against a 2, A/2 against a 4, A/3 against a 3, A/4 against a 2, A/5 against a 3, A/2 against a 3, A/3 against a 4, A/2 against 2, A/3 against a 2, A/4 against a 3? I can hear those wheels churning. If you picked any one of them go back to school because the answer is that you do not double down on any of them. If you did, you are giving money to the house and will be a loser over the long term.

If you are interested, the world's first online poker site catering exclusively to the Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender, otherwise know as GLBT (sounds like a sandwich) is now available at ComeOutPoker.com. Using some imagination, in their version of a Texas Hold'em game, no limit of course, all "straights" are eliminated from the ranking of hands.
