Heard It On The River

14 August 2006

The player was a PLOPPY, as gaming author FRANK SCOBLETE likes to call buffoons who clog up blackjack tables everywhere. This particular ploppy had invaded my space on a table recently as I was undergoing a rare win streak and he promptly started telling me where I made the wrong moves while on the other hand asking the dealer what he should do. She, and I, put up with him sending silent signals and grimaces across the table as he bounced from misplayed hand to misplayed hand. I make it a rule to ignore such idiots and just suffer until they bust out but in this case the young lady dealing the cards finally had enough when he again loudly asked for advice. "I'm not here to teach you mister, I'm here to beat you," she said. Ole!

In case you had any reservations about why casinos are in business, that statement put it in perspective. Don't expect the casinos and their staff to be your mentors. Their job is to win and keep you smiling when they beat you. You enter every game with the odds against you; why would you increase those odds with little knowledge on the game you are playing. It is up to you, the player, to understand the odds, the moves, the management of money and how to put it all together to give yourself a chance. Knowing all that, you have a chance of winning, sometimes.

Speaking of winners, the new DIAMOND LOUNGE at the HORSESHOE is certainly that and more. This recently opened oasis for rated players occupies two floors behind the high limit slot pit and also overlooks Bluesville. Said to cost some $7 million this large plush is the pride of JOHN SISINNI, VP of Player Development and his key assistants, CHAD COCHRAN, Director of Casino Marketing, and PATRICE FORSTER, Casino Marketing Manager. This beautiful room is a very strong attraction for Horseshoe. Look for a feature story and photo on the room in the next issue of JACKPOT.

Also joining our winners list this month is the opening of GRAND BILOXI on the Gulf Coast and the nearby BEAU RIVAGE. The Grand, which was destroyed by Hurricane KATRINA, opened in its hotel on August 17 and GM KAREN SOCK says that the good news is that is that of the 1,500 employees who will staff the facility, 95 percent are returning employees from Grand properties in Biloxi and Gulfport as well as the HARRAH'S Entertainment Mid-South Service Center. BEAU RIVAGE, which opens August 29, has announced that 3,800 employees will be back at work, or 100 percent of the former work force. As PRESIDENT GEORGE CORCHIS stated about the opening…"We are confident in the future strength of the Biloxi market…" If you are visiting the Coast, IP is holding a THREE CARD poker tournament on Sept. 29 and one in every twenty-five players will have a chance to compete in the national championship in Vegas. Call 888-WIN AT IP.

Words are flying back and forth between the camps of ANGELICA MARTINEZ and MIRIAM BRAKACHE anticipating their upcoming rematch August 26 at the FITZ. In their previous meeting Martinez won a disputed majority decision. The talking stops, however, when they square off as these two warriors are battlers and the fight will be the highlight of the night that also features the SWAMP DONKEY, Adam Richards, who will take on TIPTON WALKER in a six rounder. Covered up under all the hyperbole is a really good fight that will match undefeated RAYONTA WHITFIELD (15-0, 8 KO's) in an eight rounder against ALEJANDRO MORENO. It will be another sellout so get your tickets early at the Fitz gift shop.

AROUND THE GAMBLING WORLD…PRINCE HARRY had added gambling to his list of vices and was recently spotted trying his luck at Stanley's Casino in Bournemouth. With all his dough, he was only betting one five pound chip at a time…Even while rockets flew overheard and Israeli plans bombed away, CASINO du LIBAN just north of Beirut remained open but high roller private rooms were closed. It seems the whales were the first to swim off when the fireworks started…. DONALD TRUMP is only asking $125 million for his 80,000 mega-mansion in Palm Beach but he is topped by Saudi Prince Bandar bin Sultan who wants $135 million for his 56,000 square foot tent in Aspen…$1 BILLION in annual sales…that is the number just put up for one year's action by the OREGON state lottery…and millions do not make for happiness as recently reported in England where Clyde Baxter and his sister Virginia shared their lives until it all imploded. They won $6.75 million pounds but then greed and jealousy took over and his brothers don't talk, his parent's marriage has collapsed and he says sis cheated him out of a house worth $2 million pounds. GOODTIMES RADIO will be making its debut in the Gulf Coast casino market on August 26 when it will broadcast live from IP (Imperial Palace), the first casino to re-open after the hurricane. Anticipating renewed competition as other casinos come on line. IP has spent a lot of money improving the casino and hotel that has attracted unprecedented numbers of players to the house and now has all the tools in place to be a very strong ongoing force in Biloxi.

QUOTE OF THE MONTH…"When a player's wrong, the player is always right."
John Sisinni, VP Player Development, Horseshoe Casino.
