Heard It On The River

17 July 2006

Check out the photograph on the front page of this issue with a cast of questionable characters that look like they just got in town from New Jersey. Is it Tony Soprano and his gang? Who is the babe? Sure looks like them and it works as the graphic to illustrate a feature story on the appropriately named BA DA BING Blackjack Tournament at GOLD STRIKE There is $125,000 on the line, not to mention first place for $50,000 and that kind of money will attract a lot of players, like tournament pros KEN SMITH, of BLACKJACK TOURNAMENTS. COM, and well-known author and blackjack expert, DR. HENRY TAMBURIN, who also writes for JACKPOT and publishes the noteworthy BLACKJACK INSIDER NEWSLETTER Expect more to show up so call now to get in the deal at 662-357-1111.

WHISPERS…is there a new casino coming to Tunica? And we are not talking about the MYRIAD BOTANCIAL GARDEN cluster? And we also "heard" that a big name in gaming, a very big one, is making a move in West Memphis, AR. Stay tuned.

Now that the U.S. HOUSE has moved against online poker and other forms of Internet gambling will this mean that if the Senate passes similar legislation that some 70 million Americans now playing poker online will rush into casino poker rooms. And where will another 23 million or so go to play the other games? Maybe it's time to buy some casino gaming stocks. JACK ABRAMOFF, where are you when you're needed?

With over 40 million in its database, which grows by the minute, HARRAH'S ENTERTAINMENT has its finger on the pulse of gaming in America but it also likes to retain experts to do studies by retaining national firms in the business. For instance, its latest national survey recently released reveals that American's made more than 322 million casino trips last year. Some 52.8 million of us age 21 and up visited casinos to gamble at least once the same year. Maybe with online Internet gambling soon to meet its demise after the Senate votes on the House action to ban such, this number will jump dramatically. As you might expect, it's people with the gold that like to gamble the most. Casino visitation was highest among adults with household incomes in excess of $95,000.

But there is work to be done in the South The survey revealed among the ten states listed as generating the most casino visits, none from the South were included, unless you count Missouri. If you want to learn more go to casinocitytimes.com and hit Gaming News and scroll back to 22 June story, HARRAH'S RELEASES SURVEY RESULTS.

TOSCANO'S GARDEN is another new restaurant at PEARL RIVER RESORT, which already has 16 with a rib joint coming in September or so. But Toscano's fills a needed niche: great Italian cuisine prepared by CHEF JONATHAN DEL ROSSO who comes from New Jersey where they know Italian food. Visiting the fabulous resort, the pride of the MISSISSIPPI BAND of CHOCTAWS, is always a treat and Toscano's just made it better. Chef says the restaurant as yet has no signature entrée so I will provide him with one, the one he likes the most, and I agree…the PESCATORE (seafood) with shrimp, clams, mussels and calamari sautéed in garlic herbed tomato sauce over linguine. Mama Mia, dat's a dish. The chef's sauce for this delight is what makes it extraordinary and tries as I could, I could not pry the ingredients from Del Rosso to make it myself. The restaurant, in addition to all the Italian dishes you like, has a full-scale antipasti bar that is a delight to behold. This restaurant is a winner. Try it out when you visit Pearl River Resort. If you go there on a Tuesday night, you can take in the $5,000 blackjack tournament or on a Thursday, roll the dice in the $5,000 craps tournament.

THIS 'N THAT…A third generation gaming employee, FRED COMPTON, has been named as the new VP of Table Games for HORSESHOE and SHERATON casinos by HARRAH'S MID-SOUTH. A native of Las Vegas with 28 of experience in gaming, he most recently was at Horseshoe in Hammond, IN…Harrah's also announced it has joined forces with the MEMPHIS JEWISH FEDERATION to launch the Scheidt-Hohenburg and Harrah's Hot Meals program through 2007. The program will prepare, serve and deliver an estimated 16,000 kosher meals to community seniors, who would otherwise go without…Check out the special August golf package that HOLLYWOOD offers for RIVER BEND LINKS. For example, a Sunday-Thursday package for double occupancy costs only $119 and includes a one night stay, green fee and golf cart. When you are at Hollywood, check out the $500,000 Thriller cash giveaway.

PEARL RIVER RESORTS famed DANCING RABBIT Augusta-like layout, also offers golf packages where you can stay in the guest rooms at the luxurious clubhouse and drive your cart to either GOLDEN MOON or SILVER STAR casinos. Also, if you are having trouble with your golf grip, check out Asst. Pro DEMAYNDO MINGO'S cross hand grip. It works for him, believe me. I played 9 holes with this quiet Choctaw, and club pro, the congenial MARK POWELL, and it was wondrous to watch him crush drives that were straight 95 per cent of the time. The unique grip also helps him putt with laser beam accuracy. Has no plans for the tour, his goal in life is to be a teaching pro and give clinics to kids who want to learn the game. CHEF DAVID PAUL will be moving from the great ECLIPSE restaurant at GOLDEN MOON to the resort's new RIB JOINT to open in September. Bet he will miss the room's bar tender, RUSSELL, always friendly and comes up with great drinks, and JAMES, a good a server as you ever experienced. ROBERT NANCE, room chef at Ventana's, will move to the Eclipse, another terrific eatery. The new SPORTS TICKER POKER ROOM at Pearl River Resort is humming with action since it recently opened and manager JAY EUBANKS will stage a $50,000 GUARANTEED NO LIMIT TEXAS HOLD 'EM tournament on Saturday August 12 based on 40 or more entries. The 14-table room in the Golden Moon is also hosting weekly satellite tournaments for the WORLD POKER OPEN next January at Gold Strike Casino. If none of these gets your attention, how about "Early Bird" tournaments on Tuesday, Wednesday and Fridays at 6 a.m. Call 1-866-44PEARL, ext. 31570 for details.

The master planned community that is developing 280 acres around TUNICA NATIONAL says it will break ground" soon"…what's wrong with giving out a date? We are still waiting on word of a groundbreaking for September for Myriad Botanical Garden.

FROM THE QUOTABLE GAMBLERS…The Lyons Press
You may have heard about the tourist vacationing in Las Vegas. He didn't have any money to gamble, so he just watched the games and bet mentally. In no time at all, he'd lost his mind."
