Heard It On The River

22 June 2006

We have our first female president in town and she brings a lot more to the office than some presidents we've known. HOLLY GAGNON has been appointed GOLD STRIKE'S new president, not General Manager, the customary title for heading up a casino operation. She brings with her a portfolio of capabilities that the MGM MIRAGE feels will play a key role in transforming the property into one of the South's premier resorts.

COO GEORGE CORCHIS hails her background and experience as "tremendous assets" for the property and with 20 years of professional knowledge and accomplishments in strategic management, business operations, finance and gaming, she has the package. Holder of an MBA and also a CPA, her professional career runs from the business side with Price Waterhouse, Mass Mutual, and Blue Cross Blue Shield with her gaming experience coming from stints at Foxwoods Casino, and Harrah's Entertainment.

HARRAH'S Employee Recovery Fund recently issued $2.1 million in assistance to nearly 2,800 current and former employees to aid those hardest hit by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. It was the second issue made by the fund, which previously paid $4.5 million to 3,600 employees.

In other recent hurricane related developments the hard luck HARD ROCK in Biloxi has announced that the rebuilding of its devastated property will soon be underway with an expected opening on July 4 of 2007. The casino was just days away from opening when it was knocked out by Katrina. BOOMTOWN Biloxi also said it would re-open on June 29, which is ahead of schedule. The ISLE of CAPRI says it has received site and development approval from the MISSISSIPPI GAMING COMMISSION to develop its previously announced casino resort in West Harrison County.

PEARL RIVER is hosting the NGA/HOOTERS PRO GOLF TOUR on August 7-13 giving you another good reason to visit this development of the Mississippi Band of Choctaws near Philadelphia, MS. One of those reasons is the GEYSER FALLS water park, a hot spot in summer that packs 'em in. They continue to aggressively promote this resort and will host the second annual Pearl River Resort Classic Media Day in July. FORE!

HOLLYWOOD has opened it newly renovated buffet. You'll want to go check it out and see for yourself the many improvements that have been made. They've got great food there as well as atmosphere!

Another handy snack place we discovered whilst wandering amidst the slots at Hollywood is the BOX OFFICE BAR. It now serves seafood appetizers daily from noon to 10 p.m. From steamers and oysters to crab claws and gumbo, it's all there. The hot dog cart by the front door is worth a visit as well. Hollywood features NATHAN's, the original Coney Island hot dog.

Speaking of Hollywood, the casino is hosting the $500,000 Thriller. Every weekend, Hollywood is giving away lots of cash in the biggest promotion they've undertaken in years.

SAM'S TOWN is hosting the Sam's Town Firecracker $50,000 Slot Tournament. The event offers a chance at big money with a low buy-in. On Friday and Saturday, July 7 and 8, you could win your share of $50,000 in the open tournament. The first-place finisher is guaranteed to win $25,000 cash. The event pays to top 100 finishers based on 250 entrants. Buy-in is $200 and re-buys are $100. The buy- in includes: A two-night complimentary stay, four complimentary meal vouchers, three rounds of play and an awards banquet.

PrizeFight Boxing and the Fitz Casino have joined together once again to offer "Fights at the Fitz," an old fashioned brawl. Fights at the Fitz will take place on July 8 in the Fitz Great Hall. The boxing card features two highly talented and hard-hitting super flyweights in a six-round fight. This bout will consist of top prospect Ryonta Whitfield, 13-0 (7 KO's) from Augusta, Ga. against Roberto Gomez, who has 10 KO's in his career. Gomez hails from El Paso, Texas. Also on the card is Tunica's own Ray Lunsford, in a six-round heavyweight fight against Innocent Otukuwu, 13-8 (2 KO's), out of Minneapolis, Minn. The hard-hitting Deandrey Abron, 8-1 (5 KO's), from Memphis, Tenn., goes up against Joseph Harris, 6-8 (4 KO's) from Martin, Tenn. Look from Abron to continue to add to his win total as he ascends the light heavyweight ladder. Jose "Pepe" Rubio, also a Tunica fighter, will put his 5-0 record on the line against Tyrone Wiggins in a lightweight fight. Rubio and Wiggins both have four KO's in their careers. Jessa Lara, 10-1-1 (7 KO's), is also on the card in a junior welterweight fight. Doors will open at 7 p.m. with the first fight scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available for purchase in the Fitz Casino gift shop located on the first floor of the hotel. All seats are priced at $25 in advance and $30 at the door.

FROM THE QUOTABLE GAMBLER, The Lyons Press
"Many stories are told of the fabulous high stakes games, the best known probably being of the flashy big time gambler who sat in a game with a group of Texas oil moguls. Wishing to let them know immediately that with him money was no object, he grandly came forth with a roll of ten thousand dollars and called for a stack of chips. The banker promptly accommodated him—with one white chip, the ante."
ALAN DOWLING, The Great American Pastime (1970)
