Heard It On The River

23 May 2006

This is a nice story and I hope it has a happy ending. FREDDIE NORWOOD, a former two-time WBA featherweight champion of the world, is starting on the comeback trail of all places at the next FIGHT AT THE FITZ on June 30. With his credentials and name recognition you might of thought he would get a national venue debut but shrewd Southaven promoter, he of the glistening scalp, BRIAN YOUNG, has signed fearless FREDDIE to an exclusive promotional contract with PRIZE FIGHT BOXING. Freddie, now 36, with the body of a youngster and the heart of a lion, had an outstanding 38-1-1 record with 29 knockouts when he stopped boxing about four years ago. There is heck of a story concerning his "retirement" and we hope the story has a Hollywood ending. We're saving the details of his absence for a feature in the next issue of JACKPOT MAGAZINE and it covers mayhem, his mom, and incarceration. Stay tuned but if you like boxing this is going to be a hot ticket at the Fitz.

The GOODTIMES RADIO SHOW will celebrate its 12th birthday on June 12 and the "VOICE of TUNICA" has a lot of casino folks who have believed in the show that supports the casino industry in Mississippi and we thank them all for that loyalty and ongoing support. It is the longest running live casino gaming format show in the country and can be heard on COUNTRY LEGENDS WMC790 AM, Memphis every Saturday morning from 8:30 to 11 a.m. It is also on the Internet at audiovegas.com where it is also archived.

This Saturday, May 27, the show will be via a remote broadcast at PEARL RIVER RESORT right from the lagoon-side Beach Club at GEYERS FALLS WATER PARK. Maybe we can get WYNONNA JUDD, who is performing at the Resort May 26, to come by and sing Happy Birthday to us as we sip Mai Tai cocktails. Blue-collar comedian, RON "TATER SALAD" WHITE will be there on June 3 with two shows. Make it a weekend there with family time in the water park and some golf at the outstanding DANCING RABBIT golf course, which is in top shape this year. Just call 1-866-44PEARL. By the way, the Resort has some 15 restaurants headed by award-winning Executive Chef, STAFFORD DeCAMBRA, if you want a nice selection of varied and delicious cuisine. Read more about the chef in a feature in this issue.

The RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE benefit golf tournament that is staged each year by the ALPHA DELTA PI Alumnae Association raised over $25,000 for its 19th event held at Cottonwoods recently and HARRAH'S made the event a big success by sweetening the pot with a $50,000 donation. Some 31 teams played in the GRAND CASINO sponsored event, a 20 percent increase. The tournament will be held at Cottonwoods again next year and all proceeds benefit the home-away-from-home for 51 families who have children battling cancer or other catastrophic illnesses with treatment at ST. JUDE Children's Research Hospital.

Little changes can make a lot of difference and BALLY'S is making some. Like adding a bunch of new handicap parking places to help those who need it and relocating valet parking away from the front entrance so more guests have easier access, and adding a lot of "to go" items to encourage an "eat in" policy for those who like to "munch 'n play." And you can still get a great steak special for only $7.99 in THE BARN.

The BONKERZ COMEDY CLUB is making a comeback, this time at RESORTS CASINO. You can get in free with a Players Club Cards but seating is limited so come early. Show time is 9 p.m.Performing will be TONY ESPOSITO and MIKE WEST. Call 866-797-7111. On the opening night, there will be 3X cash back.

Down on the Gulf Coast Grand Casino toppled its 12-story Katrina-damaged hotel with 400 pounds of explosives so it can proceed with a new resort. GM Karen Sock said the new resort will be the best in the market and come August Harrah's is expected to open a new casino in a hotel on I-90. Also on the Coast the glamorous BEAV RIVAGE should open by the end of August. GEORGE CORCHIS, president, said the restored and upgraded facility would be at a higher level than before with new restaurants, remodeled rooms, a new poker room and the same shops on the promenade. PENN NATIONAL, which owns HOLLYWOOD CASINO in Tunica, has changed the name of CASINO MAGIC Bay St. Louis to Hollywood with the same thematic approach and hopes to re-open later in the year.

Wanna see Tunica from the river side. Check out the newest thing to do, a ride on CAPTAIN DON'S shallow draft airboat that will take you through the backwaters and bayous. Embark from the dock at the TUNICA RIVERPARK every 30 minutes from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.

FROM THE QUOTABLE GAMBLER, The Lyons Press

At a classy Strip Hotel the dice got really hot and action fast and furious. The lucky shooter became so excited stacking up $100 chips and throwing his winning dice that his false teeth fell out onto the green-felt table. The Boxman whipped out his false teeth, and said, "You're faded."
