Heard It On The River

24 March 2006

When the sleek PAN AM Clipper Connection Boeing 727 touched down gently on the wind-swept runway at Tunica Airport, it carried not only a load of travel agents and other guests, but also the hopes of the County and its important casino business for increased visitation from gamblers and tourists. The flight from ATLANTA was the first commercial air service since the recent expansion of the shiny new airport and the promise it brought augurs well for our growing destination resort. It is not a lot, but the three weekly scheduled flights on the 141- seat Clipper is the only the beginning. We built it, they will come. Five resort casino properties helped underwrite the program to make the Clipper Connection a reality, Harrah's three properties, Grand, Horseshoe and Sheraton, Gold Strike and Hollywood. As one visitor stated.."The Pan Am flights from Atlanta to Tunica are going to make it very easy to get this gaming destination,"said Tiffany Kepple from FOX SPORTS SOUTH. "The flight is only an hour and I think the low fare mixed with the enticements Tunica has to offer are going to keep people coming from Atlanta again and again."

While the big Wheel of Fortune $1,057,150 jackpot won at Pearl River Golden Moon Casino by JUDITH LOMAX of Birmingham, Alabama, was the most exciting recent news out of this wonderful resort in the piney woods of central southeast Mississippi, there were other significant developments. Golfers already know that the DANCING RABBIT golf complex is one the very best anywhere and GOLFWEEK magazine just enhanced that stellar reputation by rating the AZALEA and OAKS courses highly. The Azalea was rated at the second best course in the state and the Oaks ranked at number four. In June Dancing Rabbit will host the Mississippi Golf Association Men's State Amateur Championship. The rest of the news is not a surprise for the loyal following of Executive Chef STAFFORD DeCAMBRA. He just received the AMERICAN CULINARY FEDERATION'S Southeast region Chef of the Year Award and will now advance to the final cooking competition where one of four regional winners will be named USA's Chef of the Year. Overseeing some 14 different restaurants at Pearl River, Chef has his plate full.

HARRAH'S held a rally luncheon recently for its HARRAH'S ENTERTAINMENT REACHING OUT (H.E.R.O.) community charity program and told a packed ballroom of Team Member volunteers that it had given back over $1.5 million last year and employees had donated over 2,500 hours in volunteer work. (See complete story in this issue).

Tunica got some well- deserved recognition with a handful of awards for tourism achievement last year with recognition at the Governor's Conference on Tourism. BILL CANTER, the Convention and Visitors Bureau director of marketing and sales won the Mississippi Community Volunteer of the Year Award. The Event of the Year was the Tunica Air Races and Air Show that drew over 25,000 attendees in its debut here and the RIVERPARK received the Tourism Achievement Award adding to its seven tourism awards won previously.
