Heard It On The River

26 August 2005

It was a four day marathon and then some and being a bar owner didn't exactly put GREG BERKOW in top shape for a grueling final table session that didn't end until 2:30 a.m. at GRAND. The stocky Berkow, garbed in a sport shirt and hat, outlasted 178 players in the $10,000 buy-in for the HARRAH'S WORLD SERIES of POKER CIRCUIT CHAMPIONSHIP last week and whooped it up as $561,175 was dumped on the poker table for him. He also won the coveted gold ring signifying his victory over 8 tenacious finalists that included the vaunted JOHN JUANDA, who won the JACK BINON WORLD POKER OPEN here in 2002. The total prize pool for the Texas Hold 'em no limit event was $1.7 million. The 15-day event, the first one on Harrah's 12-event circuit tour, was attended by over 3,000 players. TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR KEN LAMBERT predicted that the next one to be held next January at Grand, would be a far bigger event and he gave high praise to MIKE TOBIAS, Table Games Director, KAREN KAEGIN, Poker Room Manager and Asst. manager, JERRY WILDMAN and their staff for getting their capable arms around the complicated logistics of this big time event in less than six weeks. They all get our coveted " ATTABOY AWARD."

Wanna get double points all day every day? GOLDSTRIKE has just put this promotion on the market for anyone who wishes to play on a $5 denomination or higher reel slot machine. I like $5 slots, especially the Double Diamond multipliers with one coin in instead of two. You get longer playing time and smaller hits but this method seems to keep me in the hunt longer for bigger pots. I know it's all random but it has worked for me more often than not. GoldStrike is also the first to install the new MILLIONISER, machine from ARISTOCRAT in Tunica Resorts. Reminder: If you haven't seen BALAGAN at GoldStrike's fab MILLENIUM theatre, you are missing one of the very best shows to ever play in this area and that includes Memphis. If that sounds like a blatant plug for this extraordinary cirque-style aerial acrobatic show, it is. It deserves it. Call 662-271-1111 for tickets.

HORSESHOE knows capital investment is one way to re-energize and following a $13.5 renovation recently, the casino is following that with another $18 million investment. For those of you who speculated that Harrah's takeover of the famed 'Shoe would be for the worse and the Binion legacy would fade, forget it. GM GEORGE CORCHIS, at 36, the youngest top exec in the state's gaming biz, says Harrah's will keep the heart and soul of the Binion name and rep intact, in fact, grow it more. See the full story on this dynamic exec and plans for the 'Shoe and its neighbor, SHERATON, on the front page of this issue.

Still time to dig up $500 to enter GRAND'S $150,000 blackjack tournament on Sept. 16-18. Usually it draws a big crowd so don't wait. Is a $60,000 first place prize big enough for you? Hope so. Call VIP Services at 1-800-550-4473 and mention code name 'Blackjack.' My rotator cuff is better, so I guess I will be playing. If you are lucky enough to dine in Grand's LB's steakhouse, do not overlook the PORTABELLA MUSHROOM topped with a slender filet of the most tender piece of beef you will ever chomp on. A great appetizer.

PENN NATIONAL, which owns HOLLYWOOD CASINO, has been named again as one of the country's fastest-growing companies by FORTUNE magazine in its September issue. It marks the fifth straight year that Penn made the list. HARRAH'S has signed an agreement to purchase the IMPERIAL PALACE on the Las Vegas strip. The move will give Harrah's a larger foothold on the Strip, as it owns four adjacent properties. The sale does not include the Imperial Palace in Biloxi. The HARD ROCK in Vegas has put a different spin on security. The casino has purchased four German Shepherd guard dogs. The K-9 unit will provide a "visual sense of security" in high traffic areas of the property.

I like old cars, classics, rods, muscle cars and so forth and you can see them all at SAM'S TOWN DELTA RIVER CRUISIN' CAR SHOW on Sept. 16-18. It's a freebie so get on down there. There is also a kickoff party with live entertainment.

Across CASINO STRIP from SAM'S TOWN, you can take in the lovely and talented CARRIE FOLKS who will be warbling in the SAFARI LOUNGE at H0LLYWOOD on Sept. 2-4. A former MISS TENNESSEE, and a talent winner in the Miss America contest, this girl can flat sing. And look nice doing it. She has a Top 20 record to prove it. Show times are 9:30 to 1 a.m. Don't forget the Irish brawl slated for FITZGERALDS on Sept. 10. It kicks off the first of a series of 8 "FIGHTS AT THE FITZ'" Get your tickets while they last at the gift shop.

REMINDER: Tip your dealers, server staff and cage personnel and tune in to the GOODTIMES RADIO SHOW on WMC79 now on earlier at 8:30 to 11 a.m. It's mall about Tunica gambling with top experts giving you free advice, so why not?
