Heard it on the River

17 August 2005

The private reception for the exceptional show, BALAGAN, was a great coming out party in Tunica for GOLDSTRIKE under its new management but how do you follow up that wonderful soiree with impact? How about putting in what folks hereabouts like the most, more slots. Like $7 million worth of them. President and COO of the casino, JEFF DAHL, told the MEMPHIS BUSINESS JOURNAL (Aug. 12-18) the following…"We're in the process of making a $7 million slot equipment purchase with ticket in/ticket out technology because we want to offer the latest in great technology for our guests."

Speaking of change, FITZGERALDS, has re-arranged the gaming floor on the first floor and we also learned that the new management team of GM DAVID SCHUGAR and DIRECTOR OF MARKETING NANCY DARCY, have signed a deal with PRIZE FIGHT BOXING of Southaven for an eight-fight deal. These matches have been successful wherever they have been held usually drawing a full house so this move was a good one. The first one will take place Sept. 10 and its labeled, 'FIGHTS AT THE FITZ"…and old fashioned Irish Brawl. Look for more promotions, entertainment, tournaments, facility changes and more that guests will like at Fitzgeralds, which will build on the already solid base that existed there.

Speaking of fights, how about the nasty kind, no-holds barred bashing. If you like violent entertainment, like most Americans, take in the FREESTYLE FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIP to be held at GRAND Saturday Sept. 24. It was close to a sellout last time around. You will get to see all the fighting disciplines in one ring like karate, jiu jitsu, boxing, grappling, kickboxing and whatever the combatants can bring on. A martial arts fest. Use your comp bucks to buy tickets at the Grand's box office.

Another big event, not as violent, but very competitive, is the $150,000 blackjack tournament slated for Sept. 16-18 at Grand. First prize is not chopped liver but a guaranteed $60 grand. For a $500 buy-in you can get a shot at it playing against an expected field of about 280 players, more or less. Sign up now by calling 800-550-4473 and use the code name 'Blackjack.' And there is still lots of time to take in the WORLD SERIES of POKER CIRCUIT event at Grand. Events are taking place every day with the big NO LIMIT HOLD 'em CHAMPIONSHIP, a $10,000 buy-in, to run for four days starting Aug. 22. No charge to watch if you don't want to swim with the sharks. HARRAH'S, which has made a big investment in top-level poker events, picked Grand here to kick off its 12-stop circuit and will bring it back for an encore in Jan.

Is there another hotel coming to Tunica, a big one? We've heard a whisper of such but have no confirmation. Stay tuned. Hope it pans out better than the proposed NASCAR-like track or the two proposed casinos in MHOON LANDING and down the road from CASINO STRIP. Try out the new RIVERBOAT HOLD 'em POKER at HOLLYWOOD for a shot at a big jackpot.

How about a poker cruise, virtually free? You can win one a cruise to the BAHAMMAS in the WORLD POKER SHOWDOWN CRUISE TOURNAMENT at PEARL RIVER RESORT that begins Sunday Aug. 28 with additional dates on Sept. 25 and Oct. 30. The buy-in in only $135 for the Texas Hold'em event. The big prize is the 7-day cruise aboard the Mariner of the Seas departing from Ft. Lauderdale and sailing the Eastern Caribbean. You can also win a seat the WORLD POKER OPEN by playing in satellites at SILVER STAR CASINO in Choctaw, MS. Each Sunday the poker room hosts $90 buy-in satellites to qualify for the $10,000 buy-in championship event whose date has been determined as yet.

There still lots of warm weather ahead of us so enjoy it more by winning a ski boat, plus cash, at BALLY'S. A drawing will be held there on August 26 for a chance to win the sport boat or $15,000 cash option. If water sports not to your liking, how about a nice Mercedes? ISLE of CAPRI in Lula will hold a drawing on August 26 for a shot at a 2005 BENZ convertible and on the same night ISAAC HAYS will be singing in the FLAMINGO BAY BALLROOM. What more reason do you need to motor on down to Lula? RESORTS TUNICA is giving away $100,000 in a series of 20 slot tournaments that have already begun but run through December. Every Thursday R Card members are eligible to participate in that day's tournament at 6 p.m. The final event will be held Dec. 17. RESORTS will also hold a drawing on Aug. 26 for a HARLEY but if you visit the casino from Aug. 26 through the 28th, you will receive accelerated cash back benefits. And each Saturday through Sept. 25, you have a chance at winning a FORD 150-STX.

If you missed Brandon Bennett's ELVIS MY WAY at Sam's Town you missed a heckuva show. But you CAN make it up by seeing Grammy award winner DWIGHT YOAKUM on August 27. Eat at the new SMOKEY JOE'S CAFÉ while there and try my favorite, MEE MAWS MEATLOAF. Congrats to TOM SMITH who has been promoted to DIRECTOR OF SLOT OPERATIONS. He recommends you try out the many LUCKY IRISH dollar and half buck machines there. He is right!

For art lovers, you will want to check out ART AT THE RIVER PARK show and sale on Sat. Aug. 27 from 6-9 p.m. It will feature works from some wonderful artists like Allen Hughes, Margretta daLomba Dobbs and Anne Hughes Sayle. Wine and hors d' oeuvres on tap. Beginning in 2006, the COWBOY MOUNTED SHOOTING ASSOCIATION will hold its national championships at the Tunica Arena and Expo Center. This is a serious competition and is called the fasted growing equine sport in the nation. Mounted shooting is somewhat like barrel racing with the rider firing black powder blank cartridges from .45 caliber pistols at balloons. They dress right out of the 1800s and the prize money is $80,000 so these boys are serious. Good job on the part of Arena exec director ROGER NEWMAN for signing this event for three years.

If you like the only casino gaming radio show in the country, the GOODTIMES SHOW has changed its hours and is now heard every Saturday morning on the WMC, the MIGHT 79, from 8:30 to 11 a.m.
