Heard It On The River

13 June 2005

As you read this item the closing of HARRAH'S Entertainment's acquisition of CAESARS ENTERTAINMENT should be complete. It was to have taken place on June 13, barring any last minute blips. Locally that means Harrah's will own GRAND and SHERATON in Tunica, nice additions to the HORSESHOE that it bought earlier. The famous Horseshoe brand remains the same and we didn't know at press time what name changes might take place for Grand and Sheraton, if any. One would think that Grand might become a Harrah's. With its two Grand casinos on the Gulf under its wing, Harrah's will be a powerful presence in Mississippi.

COLONY CAPITAL, which now owns BALLY'S and RESORTS TUNICA, will hold the official grand opening of RESORTS on Casino Strip, the week of June 15-19 with drawings every night at 8 pm for cash and prizes. The grand prize on the 19th drawing will be a beautiful 2005 Ford Mustang GT. Entertainment throughout the week will include Gabby Johnson, Carrie Folks and Gina & The Twisters. On Friday the 17th, there will be the Miller Lite Ring Girl competition at 9 pm for the upcoming championship Tarver-Johnson fight at the Fedex Forum. Go to www.resortstunica,com or call 1-888-797-7111 for more info. On Sat. June 18, the GOODTIMES RADIO SHOW will air a live remote broadcast from Resorts on the Mighty 79, Memphis. Stop by and visit, you might become famous for 30 seconds on the air. Don't forget to get your new "R" card at Resorts if you want to be eligible for some great cash back and dining offers.

GoodTimes radio, aired Saturdays from 9; 30 to noon, on WMC79, will also help FITZGERALDS celebrate its 11th anniversary with a remote broadcast there on June 25. It will be the grand finale for the week as Fitz' blows out the candles. Guests arriving by the Blarney Stone at the main entrance will be treated to free cake and champagne. A highlight cap to the week will be a free trip to Ireland for two to be given away on the main stage at 7pm on Saturday.

I've watched these guys play and wondered if they were on to something and apparently the craps game they play is something not to be taken lightly. Some casino execs laugh at the notion of a player controlling the dice but the spotlight on dice control has brightened and the HISTORY CHANNEL has taken notice. On June 14 it will televise a show at 8 pm central on this subject and here is how the promo blurb reads for the show:

"From the physics behind the flight of dice to the eight critical steps to mastering the act of tossing two dice, we reveal the true story behind Dominic Lo Riggio's phenomenal rise to riches through a seemingly impossible challenge to control the outcome of a craps game with a flick of a wrist…when LoRiggio defies the odds and dominates the dice at table after table, the casinos vow to stop him…no matter what."

Dom, also known as the Dominator, will be on the show with famous gambling author FRANK SCOBLETE, and both high rollers have had some memorable sessions at the craps. Not too long ago, Scoblete and Dom cleaned out the racks at a Tunica craps table and Frank at one time held the dice over an hour without crapping out. Dom has had similar rolls in Vegas. The were doing so well at one point in Vegas that a stickman rapped Scoblete sharply on the hand as he set the dice, a message not to be ignored, and Frank took his money and left. I don't expect casinos to take that sort of counter measure, but will they contemplate such if dice controllers become ubiquitous after the TV show? It will be an interesting show. FAIRBANKS Steakhouse at HOLLYWOOD won its third straight WINE SPECTATOR Award of Excellence for its fine wine list and ambience and let me say that an important part of the ambience is the attentive and friendly service of the staff. I don't mean to short change the large room staff, since I don't know most of them but four guys in particular stand out consistently and work like a team in making diners feel comfortable and really welcome. My Attaboys go to: Jerry, Brian, Mike and Adrian, waiters par excellence. I think another reason the room is doing so well with its wines can be attributed to SCOTT JACKSON, a truly knowledgeable sommelier.

Speaking of restaurants, SMOKEY JOE'S CAFÉ is about to open at SAM'S TOWN overlooking the atrium where Corky's used to be. Corky's is now be part of the Great Buffet. With MEE-MAWS meatloaf and home made apple pie on the eclectic menu, Smokey Joes will have to be a hit. F&B Director JACK ELIA, and Executive Chef BARRY RHODS, have developed and taste tested the comprehensive menu and say it will be a great place to kickback and feast on down-home cooking. Sam's Town will keep the restaurant busy with two big events in July, the $100,000 Red, White & Blue open slot tournament on July 15-17 with a $50,000 first prize, and the $150,000 Bust the Bank Giveaway every Wednesday and Saturday in July. The BEAU RIVAGE, MGM Mirage' standout casino in Biloxi, is really a beautiful facility with a sublime elegance and outstanding service. . I HEARD that architects were busy at work at sister casino GOLDSTRIKE in Tunica. While already a luxurious building, will the 1,200 room GoldStrike become even more attractive? Stay tuned. You can still qualify for "It's Still the Nuts Poker $50,000 Free Roll Poker Tournament" at Goldstrike by qualifying on Sunday's. The July 17 tournament features an $18,000 first prize, guaranteed. If you like hard bodies, and who doesn't, you might want to take in the BATTLE on the BLUFF body building competition at Goldstrike on June 25 at 7pm. I was thinking of entering in the heavyweight division but my rotator cuff is bothering me. By the way, GoodTimes Radio will be airing a live remote from the Bullion Bar on Saturday June 11 from 9:30 to noon.

Before MARLENE DILL left home in Murfreesboro, TN for a trip to GoldStrike, her son predicted that mom would "win a million dollars…" You know the rest of the story. The retired receptionist was if for $3.75 when she hit the Wheel of Fortune Quarters for $1.2 million recently. Gotta get sonny on my tout team before the football season kicks off.

Cooking up some Gold at the recent Southern Gaming Summit were Pearl River Resort Banquet Manager DONNAH BAPTIST who won a gold and silver medal for her sculpted tallow center pieces, Villa Chef PAUL NORTON and Executive Chef STAFFORD DeCAMBRA, each won gold medals for the Team Chef competition and Stafford took another gold in the individual chef competition. You can sample the fine cuisine at Pearl River and take in the gambler himself, KENNY ROGERS, in concert June 2 at Silver Star Casino. 1-866-44PEARL.

The very progressive MISSISSIPPI BAND OF CHOCTAW INDIANS has signed an agreement with TULANE to offer casino and resort management degree programs in the CHOCTAW HOSPITALITY INSTITUTE in NESHOBA COUNTY. At the Institute, which is part of Pearl River Resort, students can earn their Associate of Arts degree in Casino or a post-baccalaureate certificate in Casino and Resort Management. www.uc.tulane.edu The surf is up at Pearl River's Geyser Falls waterpark. Check it out.
