Heard it on the River

21 April 2005

I get about a dozen gambling books a year to review here and right now the postman is delivering a lot of books on poker, which we all know has rocketed off the charts. The proliferation of poker, specifically TEXAS HOLD 'EM of the no limit variety, is an amazing story that keeps adding chapters. While most of these books are "how to" reads, I just got one from WENNER BOOKS that goes behind the games and deals with the characters who gave the game a face for so many years before the dot.com young bucks and television took over. It is sometimes a sordid face but never bland.

ACES and KINGS is a must read if you want to zero in on the players who played on the chitlin circuit and lived a bust and boom all-cash existence. This is a book for fanatics and beginners alike with some of the most fascinating profiles of past and present great and influential poker players. It takes no prisoners. Did you know that poker legend and hall of famer PUGGY PEARSON was cheated out of a million bucks by the mob at a crooked game in the FLAMINGO and one night when the TROPICANA was short of cash in the cage, he had his wife deliver $250,000 from home to tide the casino over. Or that another hall of famer, JOHNNY MOSS, the first WORLD SERIES OF POKER champion, was run out of Vegas for cheating. Pugnacious Puggy once cursed feared Chicago mobster TONY 'the ant' SPILOTRO who was eyeing him at a poker game. The Ant was immortalized by JOE PESCI in the movie CASINO.

KINGS is about BRUNSON, AMARILLO SLIM, UNGER, MONEYMAKER, HELLMUTH, LEDERER, FERGUSON, REESE, NGUYEN, NEGREANU and even ANNIE DUKE. I only put it down when I fell asleep. Written superbly by MICHAEL KAPLAN, who has written extensively on gambling in Sports Illustrated, Smart Money and Cigar Aficionado, and BRAD REAGAN who has covered poker stories for the Wall Street Journal, Las Vegas Life and Men's Journal, KINGS digs into the details of their lives but also provides thrilling play-by-plays, valuable insights, and how- to- advice from the best that ever played over the past 50 years. This book is not just for poker players but also for anyone who likes damn good stories that pull no punches. It is a classic that will be in bookstores on May 5.

Congrats to GRAND'S STEVE PAIROLERO who was just voted CHEF of the YEAR by the Memphis Chapter of the AMERICAN CULINARY FEDERATION. Steve is Executive Chef at Grand where he oversees the operations of six full service restaurants, a full service commissary, three room service operations, two employee dining rooms and approximately 40,000 square feet of banquet space. Not much time for golf there. Also at Grand, ALFRED KEVER, a native of Germany, has been named Executive Pastry Chef. He twice won first prize for his masterful pieces as awarded by the SALON of CULINARY ARTS.

If you are active of retired military you can get a free yellow ribbon car magnet plus a chance to win a share of $15,000 in free Slot Play at HOLLYWOOD CASINO to help celebrate Memorial Day. JOHN KOETTER, the new VP of Gaming at PEARL RIVER RESORT, tells us that soon GOLDEN MOON and SILVER STAR casinos will install some 20 new ticket redemption and bill changers kiosks at the magic Choctaw Nation complex in South Central Mississippi

MURANO'S new Room Manager ANDREAS KARAMINAS, says that the excellent Italian restaurant at GRAND CASINO now is offering a tasting menu with specials of the day coupled with a wine pairing. It includes a soup course, pasta course, fish course, meat course and desert for the fixed price that is very reasonable.

There is still time, not a lot, to enter BALLY'S ULTIMATE BLACKJACK tournament on April 22-24. A big crowd is expected for the event, which is attractive not only for the $150,000 in prize money based on 250 participants but also for the $60,000 top prize. The $500 buy-in event includes a comp breakfast, welcome fiesta, private dinner and tournament gift. Call 1-800-38BALLY, ext. 1511 and ask for ACE.

Another $150,000 blackjack tournament follows closely and GOLDSTRIKE CASINO RESORT offers its event for May 20-22, also with a $500 buy-in. First place money is $50,000 and it is limited to 268 entries. It also offers a unique prize structure in that in addition to the standard final table payouts and $500 for 8th through 36th place, there is prize money up for grabs by the two qualifying session winners and re-buy winners. To enter call

If you want a shot at $10,000 seat in the WORLD SERIES of POKER, at HARRAH'S RIO HOTEL & CASINO in Las Vegas then enter SILVER STAR'S newest poker room promotion in Philadelphia, MS at PEARL RIVER RESORT. Last year GREG RAYMER won $5 million in the world's biggest and richest poker tournament in the world and taking the trip to Pearl River Resort might put you in the same event, which should be even bigger than last year.
