Heard it on the River

14 February 2005

I don't feel charitable when I go home from a casino with my tail twixt my knees but I feel charitable when it comes to worthy organizations that need our help, and two such organizations will need our support come this April. They will involve Tunica and hopefully something in here will strike your heart…and your wallet.

Oddly enough, both events happen on April 9 but they are so different in scope that it will be easy to choose between the two, if you have to make a choice.

Since the BLUFF CITY TEXAS HOLD'EM tournament at GRAND CASINO in the meeting room next to the poker room starts at noon, it gets initial attention here. The brainchild of CHRIS DECENT, VICE PRESIDENT of UNITED CEREBRAL PALSY of the Mid-South, the two-day signature fund-raising tournament is unique to the region and will have 480 places open for poker players. In addition to prize money, players will also compete for two seats in the Las Vegas WORLD SERIES of POKER. And the buy-in is only $100. EACH DAY 240 players will compete for $10,000 in cash prizes and a free $10,000 seat in the WSOP, with $1,500 in travel expense money.

On both days 240 players will play down to two tables and the final 20 surviving players win guaranteed prizes. Players will have an opportunity to add to their chip total through tournament add-ons and rebuys for $100 and $50. You can register, and it's reported that over a 100 entries have already been registered before this official announcement, at the Grand Poker Room on Thursdays from 9 to 11 a.m., on Fridays and Saturdays from 8 to 10 a.m. and on Sundays from noon to 2 p.m.

The goal is to reach 240 maximum capacity for each day. GRAND is playing a major role in this worthy event and is the presenting - host sponsor. INFINITY RADIO (FM100 XM 93 and WMC790 AM, MEMPHIS) is the official media sponsor and GOODTIMES RADIO SHOW (WMC79- 9:30 to noon Saturdays) is the official gaming show sponsor with JACKPOT MAGAZINE and MISSISSPPI the official newspaper partners. Both will carry updated news and advertising on the event until April 9. Poker pro, CLONIE GOWEN, will not only compete but will headline the event and is now busy recruiting other top professional players which will add to the excitement of this tournament.

Local players can compete on a fairly level playing field, (Only $100 buy-in) not to mention a shot at a dream seat in HARRAH'S WSOP, the most prestigious poker tournament in the world. Just think, the last two winners of the WSOP, GREG RAMER (won $2.5 million) and CHRIS MONEYMAKER ($1.5 million) got their seats playing online so anything is possible. But you got to play to win, so cough up the dough, bro.

Later on Saturday, April 9, Tunica casinos are getting behind the 1st Annual STEAK 'n BURGER dinner, also to be held at the Grand but this one in the Convention Center and there are 70 tables up for sale, oops, a bunch have already been sold so get with it. This fundraiser will support the BOYS & GIRLS CLUB of the Mississippi Delta and incoming president of the organization for this year is STEVE SCHUTTE, Executive Vice President and GM of SHERATON CASINO. If you want to help youngsters at an early stage in their lives on the road to becoming responsible, caring and productive adults, a seat is only $100. The event, from 6 to 9 p.m. opens with a silent auction. "Our young people need strong support and guidance these days and the Boys & Girls Club does an exceptional job in that role," said Schutte, who is also co-chairperson of the event with PEGGY LINTON. "I urge our casino community to get behind this very worthwhile event and fill up every seat that evening."

The dinner, which has GoodTimes Rudi, Mississippi Gaming News, Jackpot Magazine as its publicity and advertising sponsors, will support the activities of Clubs currently operating in Southaven, Hernando, Clarksdale, Cleveland, Itta Bena and Grenada. MARVIN STROTTER, executive director of Delta Clubs, said the role of the Club is to provide a safe place for kids 6 through 18 to engage in meaningful after school and summer month activities to bring them into adulthood on the right road and a ticket bought is an investment that will grow year after year. Oh yes, the kids attending are served burgers and the adults eat steak.

JACKPOT MAGAZINE, MISSISSPPI GAMING NEWS and the GOODTIMES RADIO SHOW are supporting the event with advertising and publicity support. Oh yes, the kids eat burgers and the adults dine on steak. There at 70 tables, or 700 seats to sell and for more information on sponsorship packages or individual tickets, call 662-846-4691. I plan to see you at both events!

TUNICA'S great little airport is growing and not only will be the site of the wild air races in June but has significantly improved its capabilities with new equipment that upgrades its all-weather capability and now give it the ability to support commercial flights and corporate and general aviation, according to CLIFF NASH, executive director. We bore witness to this important upgrade with a dramatic landing recently when the MORRIS MEDIA corporate jet from Savannah landed in dense ground fog with only a 100-foot ceiling with ease and without "shooting" the runway to check it out.
