Heard it on the River

23 December 2004

Forget about asking what we want for this Christmas in the year 2004. Here is what I want for Christmas in the year 2005 and probably something we all want to happen. Bring the troops home from the relentless war we are involved in fighting insurgents and terrorists in the Iraq and many other parts of this troubled globe. When and where will be the next outbreak of violence directed again America?

I never had the worry of seeing my children go off to war but now I wonder that it won't be long before my first grandson becomes eligible to wear a uniform. Will we ever see peace in our time, to borrow a phrase from England's Prime Minister Lloyd George who said it after returning home from a meeting with a guy named Hitler. That peace took many years and millions of lives to achieve, Let's all hope and pray this holiday season that the next peace will not take as long or claim many more lives.

Now back to the more mundane things around Tunica Towne.

BALLY'S next great ULTIMATE BLACKJACK TOURNAMENT is set for Jan. 21-23 with $150,000 in prize money available including a $60,000 guaranteed top prize. This well-run event is one of the best and let's hopes that when COLONY CAPITAL finally closes the deal to purchase Bally's that it will see the value of this event and keep it on the books. No reason to kill a good thing. I've lost count but I think this is the 25th running of this tournament and that alone bespeaks of its popularity. A large crowd is anticipated to enter the tournament, which is themed WISEGUYS and MARTINIS. Call 1-800-38-BALLY, ext 1511 and ask for ACE.

GOLDSTRIKE had a big "garage sale" and employees bought old hotel TV's, gift shop overruns and lots of other such stuff and the nice result was that $5,000 was raised from the event and donated to the HOUSE OF GRACE that assists abused women and children. HOLLYWOOD CASINO brought some smiles to the faces of children at the DeSoto County Family and Children's Services when it delivered three huge Santa bags of toys to the facility in Hernando. The toys will be distributed to over 100 foster children.

HARRAH'S ENTERTAINMENT got a nice Christmas present from the AK-CHIN Indian Community, an extension of an additional five years to manage Harrah's Phoenix Ak-Chin Hotel and Casino. Also at Harrah's MARYBEL BATJER has been named VP of Public Policy and Communications. Most recently she was chief policy advisor to California GOV. ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER. She will oversee Harrah's

communications strategies and actions regarding the company's pending acquisition of CAESARS ENTERTAINMENT.

DANCING RABBIT, one of the most beautiful layouts in the country, announces that its golf director, MARK POWELL, has received the Junior Golf Leader Award for 2004 from the Gulf States PGA. If you have never played at the Choctaw course in Philadelphia MS, you're missing something special. Memphian AL GREEN will be performing at PEARL RIVER RESORT on Jan. 16. Call 1-866-44PEARL for tickets.

A new minor league called the WORLD BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION is basing a team in Tunica called the GAMBLERS. They are named appropriately because delivering fans will be a big gamble. With the GRIZZLIES up the road sucking up all available basketball dollars it will be a real challenge. Not too long ago the Memphis Hound Dogs, based in Southaven and coached by the one of the best, GENE BARTOW, lasted a season and failed to draw enough to pay the waterboy.

Congrats to former Tunica security exec HANK THOMAS who was belatedly honored by the MEMPHIS POLICE DEPARTMENT with a MEDAL OF VALOR for saving the lives of two hostages in 1976. Hank got into shootout but dropped the assailant with four shots after he fired on Thomas. The hostages were unharmed. Hank was working undercover at the time so the award was put on hold and fell between the cracks until this year when paperwork was located and Hank rewarded. It is the highest award given to a living policy officer by the Department. It's about time. Hank is now selling real estate for Shaw Rinks Realtors around Pickwick, TN.

Tip those that serve you in Tunica!

LAISSEZ LE BON TEMPS ROULER. MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR
