Heard it on the River

25 June 2004

You first read about the Canadians coming south from oil-rich Alberta to chip-rich Tunica Resorts in this column and now that the Mississippi Gaming Commission has approved them moving forward on the road to build a casino complex here, it now is a case of "show me the money."

MYRIAD WORLD RESORTS was given two years to open the gates at the end of Indian Mound road in the at Old River Lake, which is a couple of miles south of the Full House gas station as you come over the Levee near Casino Strip where Hollywood, Sam's Town and Harrah's are located. It would be the southern-most casino located in the County and might be viewed as a lousy location but the Edmonton-based group thinks they will build such a classy complex it will become a destination unto itself. We reported earlier that engineering studies were already underway for the proposed $523 million development which would include a large casino, an indoor golf course, a convention center and a water park. There has been a lot of skepticism voiced on this proposal but one astute casino GM had told us that this could be an exciting development for Tunica Resorts and would draw new customers. Myriad now has to get its finances in order and come back to the Commission for the next step in the approval process.

SOLD GOLD, meanwhile, is still trying to get its game together for the Commission and may do so soon but it has been a long process for BOB CARPENTER who wants to move into MOON LANDING with a $23 million operation.

RIVERBEND LINKS may be in the best shape ever and Manager JESSE WEEKS and his staff send an invitation to give it a try. HOLLYWOOD and SAM'S TOWN each have a nice golf package to play the course if you want to stay overnight. Daily greens fees are $60 and fall to $45 later in the day. A cart is included.

Moving into the stratosphere of casino business, MIRAGE'S $4.8 billion buyout of MANDALAY RESORT GROUP makes it the biggest gaming company in the world and the deal includes GOLDSTRIKE in Tunica. The new owners have no plans to sell off Goldstrike and it's expected management will remain the same although Mandalay's executive management will not stay on.

REPLAYS at GRAND continues to beef up its rep as a hot spot and now comes the ring girl competition for the FREESTYLE FIGHTING COMPETITION on July 24. Hopefuls can register in Replays from 9 to 10:30 p.m. on Fridays, July 9,16 and 23 to win one of three ring girl positions. First place pays $500, 2nd $300 and 3rd $200. Not bad pay for wearing a bikini or such. GARY BURRUS, Jr., a VP at GRAND CASINO, has been elected to serve as an At Large Member on DUCKS UNLIMITED National Board of Directors. It's now official; LORI HUFFSTUTLER has been named Special Events Manger for Grand. Grand also donated 4,500 teddy bears to the GREATER MEMPHIS

SPECIAL OLYMPICS to help its fundraising. CHARLES FOWLER has been named Director of Marketing at BALLY'S and will also work closely with CAESARS ENTERTAINMENT regional marketing dept. to plan and coordinate regional promotions for Bally's.

Time is running short to enter GRAND's $100,000 Sizzling Hot Blackjack Tournament on July 9-10. There's a nice first prize of $50,000 on the line and a large field is expected to compete. Call 1-800-550-4473 and use the code word "Hot."

The very popular WORLD POKER TOUR has announced 15 events for its upcoming third season with $35 million in prize money on the table. The schedule includes the final table of JACK BINION WORLD POKER OPEN at HORSESHOE and GOLDSTRIKE on Jan. 24-27. The WPT airs on the TRAVEL CHANNEL at 8 p.m. Wednesday nights. The new schedule kicks of on July 17-20 with the GRAND PRIX of PARIS from the Aviation Club de France.

Coming to GoldStrike on Sat. June 26 is the BATTLE ON THE BLUFF presented by CHRIS CAUDY. The bodybuilding, fitness and figure event will be held in the Millennium Theater.

HAPPY anniversary to SAM'S TOWN, FITZGERALDS, GOLDSTRIKE and HOLLYWOOD who have or about to celebrate ten years in Tunica. The GOODTIMES RADIO SHOW, the "VOICE OF TUNICA," also falls into that category. You can listen to what's up in Tunica every Saturday morning from 9:30 to noon on SPORTSPLUS 790WMC AM, Memphis. Or check it out on the Internet live at audiovegas.com.
