Heard in on the River

2 March 2005

The press release had a headline...GRAND CASINO TUNICA IS THE CASINO THAT CARES...but I didn't need that reminder because Grand is and has been heavily involved in the community, and that includes far-flung places like the dozen or so Asian nations that were ravaged by the deadly Tsunami. The next time you visit Grand, and perhaps after you make a hit on the slots or table games, you might consider dropping a portion of that good luck in the wishing well that is located at the main entrance. The monies collected will go directly to AMERICAN RED CROSS International Response Fund for relief in the aftermath of the massive underwater earthquake that triggered this horrific disaster.

On Friday, March 4, there will be a terrific fight card at SILVER STAR CASINO at Pearl River Resort in Choctaw, MS. Three undefeated fighters will be in action. In a ten round battle of unbeaten lightweight boxers, Almazbek Raiymkulov will make his SHOWTIME TV debut against undefeated Koba Gogoladze. In a middleweight co-feature Kelly Pavlik will take on Dorian Beaupierre. Tickets can be purchased at 1-866-44PEARL with more information at www.pearlriverresort.com

The state of Mississippi and counties that have legalized gaming collected more than $29.9 million in gaming taxes last month. With River counties leading the way with a reported 13.2 percent increase, the industry experienced a 10 percent increase in gross revenues. The 12th annual SOUTHERN GAMING SUMMIT will be held in Biloxi May 4-5.

It is probably filled to capacity of 100 players but you might still get a spot in GOLDSTRIKE'S $100,000 slot tournament set for March 11-13. There is a $1,000 buy-in but previous events were sold out. On March 5 you can take a shot at qualifying for the million dollar finals at Harrah's. Winner of the slot tournament that day will win $3,000 in cash and trip for two to Las Vegas to compete for the $1 million.

CAROLYN ERICSON of Collierville, TN won the imposing Chrysler 300 that's been sitting in the atrium at SAM'S TOWN. And she was just about ready to buy one when luck struck. FREESTYLE fighting returns for a second show at Grand on March 5 after a sellout the first time around. Grand has also installed 60 new slot machines bringing its lineup to 2,456. Among the newcomers are the exciting Million Dollar Connection machines, designed exclusively for CAESARS ENTERTAINMENT by Bally Gaming & Systems.

TUNICA NATIONAL will host USTA Pro Circuit Tennis this spring. The Wild Card competition will be March 31-April 3 and April 28-May 1. The Women's $25,000 Pro Challenger is April 4-10 and the Men's $50,000 Pro Challenger is May 2-8

HOLLYWOOD CASINO won first place honors at the MISSISSIPPI BUSINESS JOURNALS'S Salute to Business and Industry Awards. It was named for "Best Innovation," large business, with GM JOHN OSBORNE selected for outstanding accomplishments and leadership to win "2005 Who's Who in Business" and VP of Marketing, JEFF STRANG, winning "2005 Who's Who in Business," for director of marketing, large business.

I first picked up a copy of BLUFF at the Binion World Poker Open and though I am not an avid poker player, I am always on the lookout for excellent gaming publications, of which there are few. This Atlanta-produced monthly pub is well done and very well written and edited. The features, such as the profile Q&A with the legendary DOYLE BRUNSON, are interesting reading even if you don't play poker. Doyle, by the way, had a culinary kudo for Horseshoe Casino. This well-traveled poker-guru was asked by Bluff what casino had the best buffet, and he's seen them all. The answer: "The Horseshoe, Tunica has the best buffet – it's the best buffet I've ever eaten." In the same magazine Horseshoe got another editorial hit with a feature on the very capable and innovative poker room manager KEN LAMBERT. You can visit Bluff at www.bluffmagazine.com

Come on down to FITZGERALDS CASINO on Saturday, March 19 to catch the tail end of its annual St. Patrick's Day celebration and we might put you on the GOODTIMES RADIO show to answer a trivia question for some comps. Look for the broadcast table with the GoodTimes banner near the inside the front entrance. The remote broadcast will be from 9:30 to noon. ERIN GO BRAGH!

If you like good country music, like this YANKEE who has come to appreciate the finer things in Southern life, you might want to check out these acts coming to Grand Ol' Tunica. On March 11-12 a live musical revue will feature the sounds of legendary HANK WILLIAMS in the Millennium Theatre. On March 11 superstar fiddler CHARLIE DANIELS will play the Grand Event Center. Also on March 11, WILLIE NELSON will make another Tunica appearance, this time at the River Palace Entertainment Center at Sam's Town. He will be followed on March 26 when country outlaw DAVID ALLAN COE brings his guitar to the Center.

When I first received the book to review my first thought was..."We don't need another poker book." But my curiosity was up and I read on. SHUFFLE UP and DEAL is from MIKE SEXTON, you should know who he is by now but if not, he is the spokesman and commentator for the highly rated TV series on the WORLD POKER TOUR. A champion player in his own right, the loquacious Sexton spends some time in the HARPER COLLINS PUBLISHERS edition hyping the TRAVEL CHANNEL series but he also gives some very good and very basic advice on how to deal with America's favorite game, No Limit Texas Hold'em. It is a solid primer for new and novice players on the game. I wouldn't call it the ultimate Hold'em guide as the cover refers to but it does provide some real good tips and strategy that is easy to digest, and better, easy to retain so when you get on the table, you will remember Mike's advice. It got me fired up enough to pony up a $100 to enter the BLUFF CITY OPEN, the Hold'em tournament that Grand is hosting April 9 and 10 to raise funds for UNITED CEREBRAL PALSY of the MID-SOUTH. The fact that two $10,000 seats in the WORLD SERIES of POKER are prizes had something to do with it also. Heck, you might be lucky enough to go up against CLONIE GOWEN, one of the top female players in the game who is not only the spokesperson for the Open but will compete also. The book will be in stores in March.

By the way, on the kickoff day, April 9, for the Bluff City Open, Grand is also hosting the STEAK 'n BURGER DINNER for the Delta BOYS and GIRLS CLUB and with 700 seats available; it needs your help also. STEVE SCHUTTE, SHERATON'S GM is co-host of the event that will be preceded by a live auction at 5 pm in the Convention Center and we've head that one prize will be spectacular. It costs only a $100 so pony up for that worthwhile event to help the kids become responsible adults. Play poker at noon and then take the shuttle over the Convention Center for a nice auction and dinner. Call for tickets or to sponsor a table of ten at 662-846-4691.

A LAST WORD...don't forget to tip your dealers, slot attendants and service staff. Tax time is coming up and they could use some extra green.
